harboring the assassin while he
plotted the crime.
She ran a boarding house in
Washington D. C. where Booth
and his fellow conspirators met.
Her son John Harrison Surratt
was indeed a member of the
assassination group. All Mrs. Sur
ratt knew of Booth was that he
was her son's friend.
Since her son was a Confede
rate spy stationed in Washington
she was used to clandestine meet
ings in her home and thought
nothing of Booth's presence
there or of her son's associa
tion with him.
Mary Surratt was adjudged in
nocent in later trials. However
it was too late as she had been
hanged in Washington on
hot July day in 1863.
Capt. Surratt is from Balti

Fife Drum Bugle
Corps Now Short
On Music Men
The 2d Armored Division Fife
Drum and Bugle Corps is in the
market for new members to fill
the ranks left empty by person
nel turnover and applicants
need not be professional musi
cians to be auditioned.
S-Sgt. Marcus Saxton leader
of the corps said that any per
son with at least basic expe
rience with any of the unit's
three 'tools' may be auditioned.
He said that nine new men are
needed to bring the corps up to
its desired strength.
Sorely needed are two drum
re an
fifers. The latter can be retrained
from flute piccolo or any reed
instrument according to Sergeant
Saxton.
"We would like experienced
musicians to apply for the jobs"
Saxton said "but the man does
not have to be of professional
caliber. If he has the basic
knowledge on any one of the in
struments we can train him."
At present the corps is operat
ing with 13 assigned musicians
three of whom are regular mem
bers of the 2d Armored Division
Band. Two other bandsmen fill
in with the corps on occasion.
Auditions for the corps are be
in he a W a a
Saturday afternoon but Sergeant
Saxton should be called at OV5-
2702 in advance of the audition.
Saxton said the goal is to have
a 22-man Corps and to eventual
ly replace all band members
who are now playing with the
corps.
Musicians accepted for duty in
the corps will be assigned to
special duty.
The Fife Drum and Bugle
Corps was organized early this
year as a means of providing
traditional field music for the
2d AD.

'Be Sharp Feel Sharp—Stay
Sharp. That" said PFC Quenton
D. Clark "is how I made col

I've been on guard duly."
Clark of Troop C 2d Squadron
1st Cavalry 2d Armored Divi
sion has earned about 33 days
off in the 1st year.
Explaining the reason for his
success on guard duty Gark
said "I stay sharp all the time
but any soldier can do this. The
secret is to study your military
subjects know your weapon and
know the General Orders back
wards and forwards."
