FORT HOOD SENTINEL
By TOM WYLIE
An estimated 5000 persons gathered on the west
side of the Cotton Bowl in Dallas Sunday to watch a
"Grand Tattoo" a military pageant of patriotic
music still life tableaux depicting American military
history and a spectacular array of fireworks.
The combined bands of the 1st Cav. Div. and 2nd
Armd. Div. provided music for the 5th U.S. Army
Chorus from Ft. Sam Houston as they sang a medlay
of patriotic songs including the National Anthem.
Entitled "The Pageant of the Flag" the tattoo
reenacted the history of the nation through the
evolution of the national flag. State flags were in
troduced behind one of the eight national flags of the
period when each state entered the union.
Huge spotlights focused on still life skits depicting
a scene from each particular period. Spectators saw
Cornwallis surrender to General George Washington
the Battle of 1812 the Alamo General Robert E. Lee
surrender to General Ulyssis S. Grant at Appomat
tox Teddy Roosevelts' Rough Riders the Korean
winters and the jungles of Vietnam among others.
Fireworks drew scorching pictures of the Liberty
Bell Abe Lincoln and Old Glory on a black of night
canvass.
The show climaxed "America Day" activities Sun
day at the State Fair of Texas. Some 1500 Killeen-
Ft. Hood residents witnessed the event last Friday
night during a dress rehearsal at Prichard Stadium.

You'd probably be insulted
if someone called you Rip
Van Winkle right? Well
think about if for a moment.
Van Winkle chose to fold his
arms lie back and sleep for
a while 20 years to be
exact. Many guys at Ft. Hood
choose to do almost the same
sit around and wait for
their first (and last) term to
end. Although not as drastic
as Van Winkle it can be con
sidered just as bad.
Most first term soldiers are
between 17 and 22 years of
age. The prime of their lives.
So why waste them?
Yet many guys on post
keep saying "After duty
hours there's just nothing to
do around here." So what do
these guys do? Nothing. Cer
tainly not the type of life
you'd brag about to your
friends back home.
Ft. Hood is not an
amusement park but there
are a lot of activities offered
here that can make off duty
hours more enjoyable. The
soaring club flying club
rodeo club dirt riders club
and archery club are just a
few.
Avery encourages anyone
interested in jumping to visit
the club at West Ft. Hood.
"We allow all prospective
members an opportunity to
ride on one of our jump
flights and give him a first
hand look at what this sport
is all about."
Once a man decides to join
the club he must first attend
ground school. The classes
for this one week course are
held the first Monday after
payday.

Another club designed for

a man of the same name
Garland R. Lively president
of the soaring club.
If you've ever had a desire
to fly a glider this club is
the answer to your dreams.
"No experience is required
to join our club" Lively
said. "Anyone interested is
encouraged to come out and
watch. We soar every
weekend at Hood Army Air
field from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m."
Lively said winter is the
ideal time for the person with
no experience to apply.
"We train most of our
students during wintertime.
This enables a guy to solo in
the spring when the soaring
season begins."
Anyone interested in
joining the soaring club
