ROY MAZZAGATTI
Big Roy Mazzagatti, a 230-pound
(plus) giant of a ball player who is
a solid rock on defense and a wheel-
horse on offense, received more honors
than any other member of the Card-
inal football team in 1951. Mazz was
named to the Dallas Morning News'
all-Texas College all-star team as a
first team tackle, one of two collegiate
linemen in the state outside the South-
west Conference so honored. The Beau-
mont Journal chose him as its pick for
the annual Most Valuable Cardinal
award. Coaches termed him great. Be-
sides being a stalwart football player,
he is also an excellent student and will
receive degrees in electrical mechani--
cal and civil engineering on gradua-
tion.
OUTSTANDf~;as
Size hasn't got anything to do with
playing football-as Sammy Carpenter
proved. What Sammy lacked in weight
and height, he made up for in speed
and sheer determination. One of the
fastest scatbacks in the Lone Star Con-
ference, Sammy led the league. in
rushing and in scoring most of the
way-at least until he twisted a knee
in practice and had to miss the last
three games of the season. Three Con-
ference coaches saw him play and all
three named him to the All-Conference
team. He made it-first team. Sammy
averaged 6.3 yards in 96 rushing plays,
scored nine touchdowns and although
he completed only four of 17 passes,
all counted for TD's. A freshman last
fall, 144-pound Sammy has three more
to go.NG
