poll tux and dog tax. An addiilonal
sum of t:(MiO may be obtained from
tho l'eabody fund mulling miinc
JU.imil to jdiVNid annually. This sum
should build school. houses in each dis-
trict and run the school ten months
tho first your. After houses are com-
pleted Hie tux might be greatly re-
duced. Thus the means of a good lm-
sines education would ho placed In
the reach of every child raised In the
city than which nothing would do
more to Induce m illers in our city.
The city can adopt an eillelen't and
uniform system of discipline moileol
tciiciiing aim Niuniiurii hooks furnish
books und stationery to those who can
not furnish them etc so that u new
set of hooks will not have to lie gotten
und a new mode of tciiehing tried
every session.
Suitable building can lie put up
comfortably warmed in winter proper
scats with desks book cases etc. and
there Is no reason why Just as clllcleiit
teachers should not bo employed and
the school conducted in us good a
manner as the Lest of private schools
and colleges.
Some object "to sending to public
schools as vulgar ami degrading"
which wo think wrong City county
anil stale governments are carried on
by the public yet wo notice few il
any decline accepting cilice under
them while to niany these places are
objects of tho greatest solicitude. Chil-
dren ure publio property and tho pubs
lio should see they nro all educated.
There is no reason if as well con-
ducted why a public school should not
be considered aa honorable as a pri-
vate oue.
Others say "I have no children to ed-
ucate and it is not right for me to pay
to educate other peoples' children."
This Is not satisfactory. You may
hnve no children but you have life
liberty and property to protect. The
state furnishes your protectors and
this cannot be derived from an Igno-
rant and per force vicious population.
In our government all olHcers of
whatever rank or grade are elected
bv the people and it would bo as rea
sonable to expect a corrupt fountain to
send forth pure water as that an ig
norant and vicious population should
select wiso and virtuous rulers. It is
impossible for the great laboring class
tho overwhelming majority of every
neon e. to make a support and pay tu
ition for the education of their chil-
dren. It can be done by tho public
alone. These great musses well edu-
cated and employed make tho pride
and strength of their country: but when
ignorant and vicious they are the ever
lit material lor moim uuu violence.
But we have taken too much of your
spnro time.
