Admission Requirements for Teacher Certification
To be admitted to the Teacher Education Program students must:
1. Have health and physical clearance by the university nurse;
2. Be approved by the dean of students;
3. Complete at least 60 hours of semester credit;
4. Have a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.50;
5. Complete 12 hours of freshman and sophomore English (or
9 hours if ENGL 350 is also taken) with no less than a 2.0
average and with no grade lower than a "C;"
6. Have satisfactory scores on all three sections of the Texas
Academic Skills Program (TASP) test (or an approved
alternative);
7. Complete and submit an application for admission into the
Teacher Education Program;
8. Have four written recommendations from faculty members
who are familiar with the student's work and can discuss the
student's potential as a teacher (the student selects two faculty
members and the Department of Education selects two);
9. Complete an interview with the Teacher Education
Admissions and Review Committee;
10. Receive approval from the Teacher Education Admissions and
Review Committee.
Any exemptions or modifications to the above requirements due to
special circumstances must be requested through the chair of the
Department of Education. All requests will be reviewed and must be
approved by the Teacher Education Admissions and Review
Committee.
Departmental Requirements: Biology for
Teacher Certification
Major Code: BIOT
Biology is available in a one-field or two-field program as well as
through a BS in interdisciplinary studies with biology as one of two
teaching fields (see the Education section of the catalog for the BS
in interdisciplinary studies).
Departmental requirements for the BA or BS in biology for teacher
certification are as follows:
One-Field Biology (BA)
1. Biology, 36 hours: BIOL 112/114, 113/115, 221/223 or
222/224, 312, 351, 353/357, 362/364, 492/495 and 6
hours of advanced biology.
2. Chemistry, 12 hours: CHEM 131/133, 132/134, 221/223.
Two-Field Biology (BA)
1. Biology, 30 hours: BIOL 112/114, 113/115,221/223 or
222/224, 353/357, 362/364, 492/495, and 6 hours of
advanced biology.
2. Chemistry, 8 hours: CHEM 131/133, 132/134.
3. A second teaching field of at least 24 hours (see the
Education section for requirements).
Departmental Requirements: Life-Earth Science for
Teacher Certification (BA or BS)
Life-earth science is available in a one-field or two-field program as
well as through a BS in interdisciplinary studies with life-earthscience as one of two teaching fields (see the Education section of
the catalog for the BS in interdisciplinary studies).
Departmental requirements for the BA or BS in life-carth science for
teacher certification are as follows:
One-Field Life-Earth Science (BA)
Major Code: LEST
1. Biology, 27 hours: BIOL 112/114, 113/115, 221/223,
222/224, 301, 353/357, 362/364.
2. Chemistry, 8 hours: CHEM 111/113, 112/114 or
131/133, 132/134.
3. Supporting courses, 6 hours: AGRO 233, GEOL 111, PHYS
101.
4. Additional support area, 12 hours: agriculture, chemistry,
computer science, health, mathematics, exercise science, or
physics.
Two-Field Life-Earth Science (BA)
1. Biology, 19 hours: BIOL 112/114, 113/115, 221/223 or
222/224, 301, 362/364.
2. Chemistry, 8 hours: CHEM 111/113, 112/114 or
131/133, 132/1 34.
3. Supporting course, 3 hours: AGRO 233 or GEOL 111.
4. Physics, 3 hours: PHYS 101.
5. A second teaching field of at least 24 hours (see the
Education section for requirements).
NOTE: If biology is chosen as a first or second field with life-earth
science, the following program is required:
Major Code: LEBI
* Biology: BIOL 221/223 or 222/224, 353/357, 370,
492/495, and 9 additional hours of biology.
NOTE: If chemistry is chosen as a first or second field with life-earth
science, the following program is required:
Major Code: LECH
* Chemistry: CHEM 131/133, 132/134, 221/223, 322/324;
4 hours from CHEM 351, 352, 353, 354; and 4 hours of
advanced chemistry.
Requirements for Teacher Certification
Specific requirements for all teacher certifications in biology or life-
earth science are as follows:
1. Technology, 3 hours: TECH 210.
2. Reading, 3 hours: REAl) 222.
3. Professional education, 18 hours: ED)UC 311, 321, 412,
432, 488, 498.
4. Special education, 1 hour: SPED) 478.
5. Minimum cumulative GPA: 2.50.
Certification
Satisfactory scores on all appropriate sections of the Examination for
Certification of Educators in Texas (ExCET) are required for
teacher certification in Texas.
General Electives
To obtain a total of 131 credit hours, the student seeking a BA inbiology for one-field teacher certification must take 6 hours of
