78 Foreign Languages College of Arts and Sciences (CAS)
The department highly recommends a study abroad experience in a
country in which the language of the student's chosen major is
commonly spoken.
Departmental Requirements: French or Spanish:
Major Code: FREN (French)
Major Code: SPAN (Spanish)
1. Principal language, 24 hours: FLFR or FLSP, advanced (300-
499) courses; or in approved Study Abroad Program.
2. Supporting language, 12 hours: intermediate proficiency in a
second foreign language (FL_ 221 and 222, or equivalent);
or elementary proficiency (FL 111 and 112, or equivalent)
in two foreign languages other than the language of one's
major.
3. A minimum GPA of 2.25 for courses in the principal
language.
General Electives
To complete the 128 credit hours required for graduation, the
student majoring in a foreign language will need to take 27 elective
hours arranged to have 33 advanced hours. Electives may include
the FL_ 111 and 112 courses in the principal languages and
deficiency requirements in science.
Teacher Certification
Students interested in teaching French or Spanish at the secondary
school level may choose either a BA with a major in one of these
languages and the addition of teacher certification courses, or a BS
in interdisciplinary studies. The latter requires two teaching fields. In
order to certify with a BA in French or Spanish, the student must
meet all requirements for the BA in the language chosen and all
requirements for teacher certification as specified by the Department
of Education. Please see the Education section in this catalog for
teacher certification requirements and the BS in interdisciplinary
studies.
MINOR IN A FOREIGN LANGUAGE
A minor in French or Spanish may be added to other degrees. A
foreign language minor requires 18 hours beyond elementary
(FL_111, 112) proficiency. Requirements are as follows:
1. Intermediate language, 6 hours: 221, 222, or equivalent.
2. Advanced language, 12 hours: FLFR or FLSP 300-499.
COURSE DESCRIPTIONS
Please see the Course Descriptions section of this catalog. Courses
offered by the Department of Foreign Languages include those with
the following designations: FLFR, FLGE, FLJA, FLLA, FLRU,
FLSP.
NOTE: Allfirst-yearforeign language classes require a lab. Any first-
year foreign language (FL 111, 112) may be used to fulfill entrance
deficiency requirements.FOREIGN LANGUAGE FOR NATIVE
SPEAKERS OF OTHER LANGUAGES
A special provision exists for the satisfaction of foreign language
requirements (under both the general education requirements
section and the Bachelor of Arts degree requirements sections) by
students for whom English is a second language. Students seeking
to fulfill the foreign language requirements by the alternative means
listed below must (if requested to do so) be able to demonstrate to
the chair of the department of Foreign Languages native (L1)
proficiency in a language other than English (not a dialect of
English). The student's native language need not be one of those
offered by the Department of Foreign Languages.
General Education Requirements
The requirement for "Foreign Language-2 high school units or 6
hours" will be satisfied upon successful completion of the general
education requirement for "English---composition: ENGL 111 or
equivalent (3) and Literature (3)" for students who qualify as non-
native speakers of English (see above).
Bachelor of Arts Degree
For all Bachelor of Arts degree programs having a requirement for
"foreign language-sophomore level--6 hours," that requirement
will be satisfied upon completion of the Bachelor of Arts
requirement for English-composition: ENGL 112 (3) and a
second Literature course (3) for students who qualify, as non-native
speakers of English (see above).
Under this special provision, college credit will be granted for the
English courses, but not for any ESL (English as a Second Language)
course. Students will still need to complete the prescribed number of
hours for particular degree programs (usually this will mean that a
Bachelor of Arts degree student will need an additional 12 hours of
electives to replace the 12 hours of foreign language which were
satisfied by the alternative means outlined above).
INSTITUTE OF INTENSIVE ENGLISH (IIE)
The Institute of Intensive English (IIE) provides semester-long
blocks of English as a Second Language (ESL) courses at the Low-
Intermediate, High-Intermediate, and Advanced levels. The IIE
curriculum is designed to prepare students in ACU credit courses,
and consists of grammar, reading, composition, and oral/aural
communication courses at each of the three levels (except that the
oral/aural communication course is omitted at the Advanced level).
The Low-Intermediate and High-Intermediate blocks consist of
twenty class hours per week plus reading lab assignments (the
summer schedule is slightly more intensive). The Advanced ESL
block consists of 15 class hours per week plus enrollment in one
regular or audit class. ESL students must enroll in all courses
included in their assigned block of courses (one of the three levels
listed) according to incoming ESL Placement Exam results at ACU
or incoming TOEFL scores. Students advance from their initial
block by achieving passing grades in all courses of that block.
Students earning a failing grade in even a single course of a given
block must repeat that entire block. Permission to enroll in full-time
academic advance and regular credit courses is granted upon78 Foreign Languages
