Communication Sciences and Disorders
The Communication Sciences and Disorders Department offers
Bachelor of Arts degrees and Bachelor of Science degrees in
communication sciences and disorders. The department is accredited
by the Council on Academic Accreditation in Speech-Language
Pathology from the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association
(ASHA).
Four years of undergraduate education in the basic sciences, followed
by at least two additional years of clinical study are required to
practice as a Certified Speech-Language Pathologist. Graduates of
professional programs must also complete a Clinical Fellowship and
pass a national examination before earning certification. Speech-
language pathologists are required by most states to earn a master's
degree from a program accredited by ASHA.
Introduction
A communication disorder is anything that interferes with speech,
language, or hearing. People with communication disorders comprise
the largest population of Americans with disabilities. One in 10
Americans has some kind of communication disorder. To meet the
needs of these people, speech-language pathologists use behavioral,
cognitive, physiological, and technological procedures to assess and
treat speech, language and swallowing disorders. Their work involves
treating numerous communication and swallowing disorders including
children with developmental delays, people who stutter, stroke
survivors, and individuals who have progressive neurological diseases.
Speech-language pathologists also provide instruction to others, such
as actors and singers, in the preservation of their voices. Speech-
language pathologists work in a variety of settings and collaborate
with other professionals such as classroom teachers, physicians,
occupational therapists, and physical therapists.
