On Saturday, April 17, 58 students, McMurry's largest group to date, received their official
McMurry rings in front of 150 friends, alumni, and family members.
The McMurry official ring and the ring ceremony were initiated in the
2003-2004 academic year. The ring ceremony is now a celebrated tradition
in McMurry's rich history. This year's ring recipients filed into the Mabee
Room while sophomore Rachel Walter beat the drum.
-- /if Dr. Russell urged students to see their rings for the commitment
~r they represent and not just as"a cool piece of jewelry:' 2006
alumnus Erin Stevens gave a tearful keynote address before the
rings were presented.
Other speakers included Erin Hankins, President of
the Student Ambassador Board, Katy McNair, Vice President
of Official Ring Committee, junior ring recipients Josh Neaves
and Lindsey Lowry, 2000 alumnus Chris Montoya, president of
the McMurry Alumni Association, 2009 alumnus Josh Poorman,
S.Associate Director of Alumni Relations, and 1993 alumnus
Greeley Myers, Director of Alumni Relations.
; -Among the students who received rings was junior Alyssa
Alberson who says that her ring gives her a sense of pride. "I feel like
now I get to show off McMurry to the world. I also feel like it's a huge
accomplishment in my life.'
Junior Josh Neaves also expresses pride in his ring and the time and
tradition it represents. "It's a great feeling to have something to be able
to look back on and remember what I was a part of, and what I am now,"
Neaves says.
At the close of the ceremony, Dr. Russell called all recipients to the
front of the stage to put on their rings together. "If you are a student;'
Dr. Russell explained, "face the'McM'toward your heart"' As McMurry
graduates, the future alumni will turn their rings around to "face the world."
Students, alumni, friends, and family then joined together to sing the
McMurry University alma mater.
Congratulations to the hard-working students who received rings this
year and share a part in McMurry University's eighty-seven years of tradition. Ala Cumba!
