easier to manipulate a convention

To the Signal:
Thinking maybe yo 1 like to Imur
about in" trip from Snyder to Long
Heath California in c.ir with my
son. Fdd and his family ao I de-
cided to write of our trip.
We lert Snyder early on the
morning of July 2 went to Lubbock
from there to Clovls where we
struck the Santa Ft- trail. This is
one of the most noted routes known
to the northeast. It pays the tour-
ist to go far out of his way to hit
this good route for It Is a long rug-
ged rough way. The road Is curv-
ed around the mountains and wide
enough that cars can pass and It
kepi Kdd busy with his horn for you
meet them coming around the curve
with hardly enough room to get by.
You have to keep your nerve for It
looks like there'll be- a sniashup this
time. Many towns on the route
with good business and lots of peo-
ple. Have big dam on the Rio Grande
50 miles from New York. Santa Fe
trail niaken a turn at Yuma some
1000 acres In the va'iey. and you
can see a lot of wind millu and of
course It makeH you think or home.
Mountains are anywhere you see
the rough dry country. Not many
ranch houses. Have a lot of sheep
cotes and houses. No appearance
of civilization only In the towns
stations and few Harvey house to
feed the people. Some good country
between Magdalena and Socorro.
We were very lucky to meet a
Mr. Rolen from Amarlllo. He had
been over the road twice. All we
had to do was to keep )n sight and
Kdd made that old Buick do some
good running to keep In sight. We
saw the p rifled timber; at lunch
on one of the trees. Some were
long tre.s having been blown down
by al storm from the looks of the
whole tree bodies.
We came bark to the railroad at
Holbrook. going from there to Ash-
fork w here we got eas. We turned
north there and went 68 miles
through big timber. Could see
snow on the north side of the moun-
tains with altitude S625 feet. We
camped In heavy timber. I made
one more camp fire and It made me
think of my hnyhood days.. A lot
of cattle in that part of the coun-
try. Got to Grand Canyon and It Is
the deepest I ever saw. I threw
some rocks and it seemed they never
quit railing. Around this point. 70
miles the Santa Fe backed in to
Williams. We camped there. The
next town. Kingsville. we went to
over a very rough road. We went
over the big bridge on the Colorado
river. The wagon and railroad
bridges are close together. The
river is close to that '.ine or terrible
mountains. That was the hottest
day I ever saw-. The thermometer
was 110. Then we struck the des-
ert. We traveled all night and at
daybreak lacked twenty miles or
beinc through. Rome ofl the road
was cemented. Fioston was our
next stop. Guess you didn't think
or Boston le-i'is; over there in that
desert country. California has the
nicest camping parks. They are
always full of people. Most of the
highways ar- concrete and you can
almost fly. Los Angeles Is a fine
city nice in summer and winter. We
spent a few days there and went to
Long Flench. Had lots or fun. The
people all visitors went In bathing.
I don't know what gave me this bad
cold hut I've sure got one.
Yours truly.
