Distribution
Made In March
In mid-March students at the
Central and Mary Brown
Schools in Smithville took part
in a second I took distribution
under the RIF (Reading Is Fun
datnemal) program The March
distribution was done on an
"earned" book basis, in other
words, rather thai) each child
receiving a book, only those who
had read and reported on a
designated number of books was
allowed to take part Last week
school officials released the
percentages of students taking
part in the earned book distri-
bution Kindergarten led in
participation with 100^, while
the First grade w,i;. close be
hind with 92% of the students
taking part in the program 71%
of the Third grade participated
while Second grade participa -
tion was 68%
Students a.e now working
toward a second earned book
which will be distributed prior
to the summer holiday Parents
are assisting teachers in
listening to book reports
Several weeks ago question-
naires were given to teachers,
parents and students to fill out
in order to garner their opin-
ions on the RIF program,
primarily the first distribution
which gave a free hook to each
child School officials and RH
committee members expressed
delight at the response 76%
of the parents returned their
questionnaires, with one parent
finding fault with thf program
98% of the students and lOCv
of the teachers responded to the
questionnaires all being in favor
of the program
RIF is a national program
which encourages students to
read by providing them with free
books which each child may keep
as his own Another "gift
distribution is set for this
month
