the city, to the hospital Once
at the hospital the ambulance
driver was told not to take the
woman out of the ambulance, but
to take her to Brackenridge
Mr. T. insisted upon knowing
what doctor was on duty, fold
the nurse to call the doctor and
get him down to the hospital.
Once the doctor got to the hos-
pital, says Mr. T., "he did the
best job of fixing her up you ever
saw "
According to Mr. T,, "if 1
hadn't been there in person, she
would have had to go on to
Austin " The woman had only
needed stitches.
To quote another irate Bas-
trop citizen, "during the day
when doctors send patients, the
hospital has to admit them, at
night the doctors aren't on duty
to send them They (the hospital
staff) test your finances first
before a doctor's ever called "
Cruz Galvan, the Bastropam-
bulance driver, said it is true
"the doctors will not see emer-
gency cases at the hospital
They tell us they're not staffed
and don't have emergency
equipment."
Biacicenridge is a 25 minute
drive from Bastrop, Galvan
says , so unless a patient re-
quests emergency treatment at
the Bastrop Memorial Hospital,
the ambulance goes right on to
Brackenridge.
The situation, in Galvan's
words, is "really bad "
He says there is "a lot of stuff
at the hospital which can be used
for emergencies."
Galvan's statement that "tin-
doctor's tell us they don't want
to get involved" just echoes
what hospital administrator
what hospital administrator
Snead said
According to Galvan, there is
an emergency room at the Bas-
trop hospital n is weu-

are really good nurses at the
hospital" to staff the room But
