A fellow tells that he went to a
neighboring town since that town
went "dry" and was unable to get
a drink. Me asked a citizen about
It, and the citizen said: "The only
place to get a drink Is at the drug
store." He went to the drug store
but the druggist said he could only

Valpalso, Chile, Aug. IS. The
city of Valparaiso, chief port of the
"must ko ahead ot Latin American
Republich, has within the past two
days suffered a calamity similar to
that which recently devasated San
Francisco. On Tltiusday at S p. m.,
and without the least warning, thl.<
whole district, which is of granitic
gneiss formation, was shaken by a
most violent shock of earthquake.
The first 1)1 .>w was almost Instantly
followed by another of really dread-
ful violence, and at once whole rows
of houses collapsed upon number-
less unhappy victims attempting to
escape
Within fifteen minutes a great
number of fires appeared in differ-
ent parts of the town, and later It
was seen that the whole Bella Vista
portion was doomed to destruction
No news bus been received from
Santiago, telegraphic communica-
tion being entirely cut off, but it is
feared that he disaster there is even
grater than in Valparaiso. No
trains can run owing to tunnels
having fallen in and numerous land-
slides.
Up to tli? present time no Idea can
be formed of the loss of life as, ow-
ing to the continued shocks, it has
been impossible to remove the dead
from the ruins. But there is no
doubt that several hundred lost
