MASSES THROUGHOUT
WORLD JUNE 29TH
RECALL SLAYING
Rome —• The l-883rd anniversary
of the crucifixion of the first
Pope of the Catholic Church was
commemorated here on June 29 in
brilliant ceremctoies in magnificent
St. Peter's Basilica. At the time
Catholic priests throughout the
world also participated in the
world-wide observance by celebra-
ting Masses for the people ot
their parishes in honor of the
glorious martyrdom of the Prince
of the Apostles.
It \fas in the year 67, according
to tradition, that St. Peter receiv-
ed a martyr's crown by ibelng
crucified upside down in Nero's
gardens on the Vatican hill in
Rome. The exact date of his
death has not been handed down
by tradition but annually since
the year 258 June 29th has been
kept in the Catholic Church as
the day on which Peter's martyr-
dom is recalled. This date was
set for the feast because it was
on June 29th that the remains of
both Peter and Paul had been,
because of the Valerian persecu-
tion, transferred to the catacombs
on the Appian way, resting places
over which magnificent churches
were later built by the first Rom-
an Emperor to Join the Church.
The year 67 as the time of Pe-
ter's crucifixion is accepted by
Euseblus, noted historian of the
early Church, who states that
Peter came to Rome in the reign
of the Emperor Claudius in the
year -42 and died in the thirteenth
•r fourteenth year of the reign
of Nero, i.e. the year 67 or 68. This
also is supported by the tradition
of the people of Rome themselves
that St. Peter ruled 25 years as
Bishop of Rome.
TRADITION IS RELIABLE
Just as with the Savior Himself
the exact day and year of His
birth cannot be definitely set,
so also with St. Peter, the Prince
of His Apostles, the exact date
ot his death cannot be historically
established. But Just as Christ's
existence in Palestine rests on his-
toric tradition, so also is Peter's
presence in Rome based on a sim-
ilar reliable tradition. Both being
great men, one the Divine Found-
er of the Church and the other
Its first president, it certainly is
not surprising that human beings
passed down solid Information on
the place and circumstances of
their deaths. Since both ultimately
rest on human testimony, logically
If one tradition Is rejected, the
other must also fall. In connec-
ton with both, exact dates are not
as Important as the fact that they
lived and who they are.
