An endless vnrlcty of peciillur nnuiea oc-
cupations and orthography and a diver-
sity of foreign languages which embraces
nearly every nation on ine gimw. ."
odd signs aro usunlly to be found lu these
localities of tho city where tho foreigners
of a certain nationality have hived them-
selves and mudo up a district distinct-
ively tholr own. Within a few years
there has been an immense immigration
of the Polish Jews to this country. . Their
homos in this city liavo been as a rulo
located In Huynrd DlvUlon Chatham
Essex and Hester streets. The stores
long these thoroughfares advertise their
wares in signs written In Hebrew oharao
tcrs. The most ordiimry observer Is apt
to note with soino curiosity that tho oamo
of the nrtlclo is wrltton from right to loft
ond tho llguro stilting the price is written
according to our own nsngo. Thus In-
stead of writing as in English "Meat
10c." these Hebrew signs express it as
. "10a tacM."
A reporter hoppenod to bo standing in
front of a liquor store in Essex street
engaged iu au attempt to decipher ouo of
theso curious sign boards. He was ac-
costed by an elderly gontlemun who wore
a small black velvet skull cap. Ho asked
tho reporter whether ho could reud the
'IFbolattcrauswercd "No.Blr. Cnnyouf"
"Oh yes 1 cun" replied tho old man.
"That top lino roods: 'LiUor storo; Die
pesta Trluke."
"Why thnt Isn't Hebrew" exclaimed
tho learned rcpoiter. "That's a mixture
of Rnllh and Gorman."
"Quito correct" said tho stranger;
'that is wlwt is kuown as Judisch-
poutHch but it seems to mo slnco the
English wor's have boon so frocmontly
psed tho uaiuo scarce covers it."
ABOUT JUMSCII-DUUTSCII.
Tho reporter asked tho old man to tell
hhn something about Jutllsch-Dcutsch.
He readily consented.
."Tho name of Jtidlsch-Deutsch" he
jsatd "literully translated means Hebrcw-
Germun. H is not a langnago but a dia-
lect or as tho Polish Jews themselves
term It a jargon. It takes its name from
the fact that it is writton in Hebrew char-
actors but its preponderant element Is
Gorman. It contains words from almost
every language but tho extensive uho of
English is very recent. Its history like
that of all languages would be tho history
toi .the 'people who speak.lt und would
flhow tho Blngulnr wunderings of the Jews
sinco the earliest agos. At a very early
date in the world's history the Jews
traversed with the Phoenicians tho Med-
iterranean sea and Atlantic ocean und
.were- cngngo1 in trading with Britain and
the northern part of Germany. About
the year 500 B. C. Jewish travelers were
found In Greece Italy and Spain. From
the latter country they wandered Into
France and about the twelfth century
they wore strongly intrenched in Germany
and parts of Austria. Here they learned
the German language fcttill retaining a
large portion of tho words picked up in
other couutrios tho result was a conglom-
erate of German Spanish French Sla-
vonian and other tongues the first named
being tho chief eloment. And from this
remarkable pot pourrl of luugunges whs
Sroduced what is known as Judiseh-
icutsch. There were also some few Eng-
Jiflh words but scarcely suillcleut to bo
termed a factor in its composition.
"As education becamo moro widely dif-
fused in Germany anil tho Jews wero of-
fered bettor opportunities for becoming
cultured and enlightened tholr uso of this
dialect gave place to a more correct and
polished German but it is still spokon in
Uiuuy of tho 'dorfs' in that country.
Those of tho nice however who traveled
6till -further east and settled in Poland
aud Kussia have never hud any chance for
improvement and they still speak the Jar-
gon. Their dialect is distinguished from
the botU;r German by a frequent use of a
harsh guttural torinltintiou 'ich.' It is
tills dialect Qf the Poles which is used In
the theatrics! representations given at the
Oriental theatre which is carried on eu-
tircly by Polish Jews."
ANCIENT UXBBEW TOKGCR.
The old inau paused here and tho re-
porter took occasion to ask: "But whr.t
has become of the original Hebrew lun-
gunire that. they started out with?"
"Well the ancient Hebrew tonguo is
very limited in the iiumlr of Its words
and does not admit readily of extended
conversation; con.-o.nently tho nr.mads
were compelled to prey upuii the resources
Of the riclicr languages iu order to acquire
expressions for their growing domestic
but moro jarticulurly lor their commer-
cial need. The Idioms which have been
retained are few ond arc chieily of a
