The Killlnj of J. K. Burleion.
We will give com of th lator particular
of this deplorabl vut which was an
nouneed in oar Inst Issue. It aeeiu that
Mr Burleson bad some aerioua grlevano
fVgalnal Folia who killed him and a young
man named Poaton. They had both resid-
ed In Burleson's neighborhood but had gon
to th toen of tb killing oin Urn before
Burleaon went down there tb evening pre-
vious to have a his friend allego an ami
cable settlement with young Ponton Tb
fact that b atoppad over night with th
father of Post on fayor thli ataUmnt.
Young Poaton bearing of his presence ab
sented himself Tbakilliug wa don bv
Foils early the next morning. The fol
lowing passage from a special to the San
Antonio Express appear to be a fair and
correct itatoraont t
FotU was in the hog pen feoding oorn to
tho hogs when Burleson earns np to him.
Exactly what words passed between them
it is impossible to loarn. Folts's friend
claim that he did the shootlug In self-de
fense while Burloson's ftiends don't be-
lieve that such is the case. Both were
armed and if Burleson intended to do any
hooting he never succeeded a th two
shots from Folta'a pistol were the only ones
fired. On of the shot struok Burleaon in
the face the other in th aide causing al
most instant death. Folta mad no effort
to escape and wa arrested two or three
hours afterward near the place where the
shooting was done.
Foltz was sent to jail at Lockhart but ia
now out on bait Burleson's funeral took
place at the family cemetery near Kyle and
was largely attended by relative and
friends.
There was no man better known in Hays
county and but few more highly respected
than Joe Burleson. He was a citizen of
twenty-five years standing and had faith
fully served the people in official positions
of trust. Ho had been presidont of the
Hays county Farmer's Alliance from the
beginning and held that position at the time
of his death. He wa a staunch friend of
temperanoe. He no doubt had hi faults
and misdeeds like other mortals but w be
lieve that his general record was that of a
good patriotio citizen. In the troubles
which led to his untimely end (we say un-
timely for it is stated he was but G5 years
old and should in the natural order of
things have been good for ten year more
of useful. and comfortable life) they who
know best are satisfied that he was "more
sinned against than sinning." Such is our
decided oonviotion. He was killed by an
enemy and if we are not misinformed in
the presenoe of another. We have only I
their testimony as to what transpired Joe
Burleson has no one to tell his side of the
story. His friends will be slow to believe
that he played the part he is reported by
his deadly foes to have done on that occa
sion. It is an unreasonable story we no-
liove there is much very much yet behind
the curtain in this bloody olimax and the
oircumstanoes which led to it. We earn
estly hope that the hidden things of dark-
ness may be brought to light the truth
be revealed and justice be meted out to all
concerned.
Commoncemcnt.
Whouce comes the sound of siren yoices
mi nglod with the harmonious notes of the
piano the low tumiuing of the guitar and
plaintive tones of the violiu wafted to
our appreciative ears by the flower scented
breezes of balmy June? .
What means the smile that lights the
faces of the ohildren as they hurry along
the street?
Another vacation is upon us with all its
pleasures its happy releases from books
and study; bringing joy to every childish
heart and a sense of relief to older pupils.
But thore is something besides vacation
yes the old scholastic year is dying and
soon we must .number it with the past.
Soon we must say good bye to friends and
teaohers and this gives a tingo of bitterness
to pleasure derived from decorating and
beautifying the old hall for we are but strew-
ing flowors upon tho bier of the departing
year.
A few more days and it will all be past
and tho girls will all be gone and the town
dull and the weather warm and every-
thing blue except the oollege fonce which
is now receiving a coat of whithwash; only
a commencement dress. Yes we all hate
to give up our school days and those who
have attended Coronal Institute and shared
its duties and its pleasures will turn a they
pas down the walk ro often trod and take
another look perhaps a lost at the grim old
front; and give a parting sigh for the days
that are gone But wherever we may roam
or whatever fortune be onr portion; the
memory will ever bo cherished as some
thing too sacred to be profaned: our last
days of school. We learn that Miss Iola
Beckman received first and Miss Mary
Dailey second honors for the class of "89.
Virtue is noyer lacking a reward; and we
tender to these young ladies our heartiest
congratulations. May many flowers yet b
added to tha wreaths now upon their brows
and life ever be to them a aerie of unsul-
lied pleasures. Pxcauss Portia.

Rise) man tha wall our olarion'a blast

Our fated band hU vr ae. '
To life but not to hope farewell.
Your trumpet' olang and oauuon peat
And stormine shout and clash of steel
I our bnt not our country's kuell.
Welcome the Spartan death
- 'Tia no despairing strife
W fall we die but our expiring
breath
I freedom' breath of life.
Her on this new Thorniopyke
Our monumout shall tower on high
And "Alamo" hereafter be
On bloodior fields the battle cry."
Thus Travis from th rampart crlod:
Aud when hi warrior saw in 100
Like wholraina billow move below
At once each dauntless heart replied:
"Welcome the Spartan' death
'Tis no despairing strife
We fall we die but our expiring
breath
I freedom's breath of Ufa!"
They come like autumn leaves they fall
Yet bordo on Horde tney onwara rusn
With gory tramp they mount th wall
Till numbers the defender crush.
The last waa felled the fight to gain;
Well may the ruffian quake to ten
How Travis and his hundred foil
Amid a thousand f 00 men slain.
Tboy died the Spartan's death
But not in hopolos strifo;
Like brothers diod-and their expiring
breath
Was freedom's breath of life.
