THE JOURNAL OF THE REV. JOHN MORTON COCHRAN
Contributed by H. K. Arnold
My grandfather, the Rev. John Morton Cochran, was born
8 November 1825, in Campbell County, Virginia. He graduated from
Hampden-Sydney College and Union Theological Seminary. In 1852,
he came to Texas and served as Stated Supply, Indianola, Texas,
Presbyterian Church, 1852-1854. He was co-founder of Aranama
College, Goliad, 1854; Pastor, Victoria, Texas, Presbyterian
Church, 1855-62; Chaplain, Confederate States Army; Pastor of
Presbyterian Church, Huntsville, Texas, 1863-1868, where he also
served as Chaplain for the Texas State Prison. He conducted the
funeral service for General Sam Houston; served as Pastor and
Stated Supply, Indianola, 1869; Aspenwall, Va., 1870-1871;
Christianville and Bluestone Churches, Virginia, 1872; Huntsville
group, 1877-1880; Hearne, 1880-1882; Abilene, 1882-1884; Greenville,
1885-1888; Cleburne, 1889-1891; Midlothian, 1892;
Marshall, 1892-1893; Robinson group, 1894-1899; Waco, 1900;
Mt. Pleasant, 1901, and was honorably retired in 1902.
The Rev. John Morton Cochran married Harriett Ella Cocke,
daughter of Rev. Stephen F. Cocke, 15 March, 1854, Green Lake,
Texas. Nine children, four of whom died in childhood, were born
to this union. He died 18 July 1913. His widow died 10 June 1921.
Both were buried at Pearsall, Texas.
Grandfather kept a journal which is in my possession. In
those early days preachers were not paid by the church, but by
individual pledges. Ke kept a record of these pledges for the
years 1856-1868.
He also recorded 250 marriages, showing date, contracting
parties, and what, if anything, he received. It is interesting
to note that two men paid in Confederate money. His "List of
Marriages," evidently in Virginia, is as follows:
