Lay of the Texas Heu.
We have read of Maud on a summer's
day.
Who raked barefooted the new-mown
hay; .
We have read of the maid in the early
morn
Who milled the cow with the crumple!
torn:
We've read the lays that the poets sing
Of the rustling corn and the flowers of
spring
But of alt the lays of tongue or pen
There's naught liKe the lay of the Texas
hen.
Long long before Maud rakes her hay
Tee Texas hen begins hr lay
Ana ere the milkma d stirs a peg
The hen is up and has dropped neregg.
The corn mnso rustle and the flowers
spring . -
If they'd hold their own with the oarn-
yard ring.
If Maud is needing a hat or gown
Sne doesn't nustie ner hay to town.
She go. s to ihe store and obtains her
suit
For a basketful of fresh hen fruit.
If the milamaid'a beau mikes a Sunday
call
She doesn't feed him on milk at all
But she wo ks the eggs into a custard
pie
And stuffs him full of chii ken fry.
When the old man really wants a horn
Does he take the druggist (?) a load of
corn'
Not mucu! - He simply tobs a nest
And to town ue g-es you is now the
rest.
He lingers there aud talks perchance
Of true reform and correct fee-nance
While his por wife stays at home and
scowls
But i- saved fi-om want by these self-
same .owls
For while her nusband lingers there
She watches the cackling hens with
care.
And gathers eggs and the eggs she'll
hide.
Till she's saved enough to stem the
tide
Then hail all hail to the Texas hen
The greatest blessing of all to men!
Throw up your hats aud make home
bowl
For tte persevering barnyard fowl.
Though cotton's king it's plainly seen
That the Texas hen is really queen.

Now that tha city is fast ridding it-

would be well to take bold of the local

Tnere is plenty of that k nd of mate-

should appoint five delegates to attend
this meetinar in Galveston. Let all
coneerr.ed take immediate action
There is much to gain and nothing to
lose bv prompt action. It would be
well for El Paso to be represented
this convention. Now that the city is
crowieff it would be well for the citi
zens to take every advantage to puh
its erowtb. El Paso wants the inter
national dam and should keep in touch
with every public move sa that when
the time comes the city will have
friends to help it get what it wants
Th more people El PasO has and the
more money that is invested here the
better chance it has of acquiring a dam
that would make it a city of 60000 in
habitants in less than four years after
the dam is completed.

The hobo nuisance seems to be fast

mapped out street work for several
months ahead the tramps have slipped
their cables and sailed awav to point
where there is less work and more hand

The starting out of the White Oaks
surveying pat ty marks a new era to
the future prosperity of El Paso. It is
a guarantee that the Eddy brothers

will give employment to labor at.d the
employment of labor means prosperity
to every branch of commerce in the

The El Paso commercial club that
was talked of somet ago is alo- g

importance to tne city that such a club
should be organiz d. The city is curs-

aad only a strong organization of ihi-
busintui men can overcome their ait
and retard ng influences. Already
there his appeared on ths surface ai-
animosity agaii st the promoters of the

schemes will grow and as th-y gain
streogth their work will become more
open and it may result in a serious set-

great importance to the c-immercial
gr..wth of El Paso A commercial club
that would act b-avely and oromot.lr
could counteract the effects of all this
