According to recent study
Erath County's gross sales advanceAccording to the most recent Sales and
Use Tax Analysis Report from the State
Comptroller's office, Erath County's third quar-
ter 1988 gross sales fell slightly below the year
earlier level. A strong performance in the first
period offset this movement, however, giving the
county a slight advance for the January-Sep-
tember period. Four other area counties also
reported sales gains in the first nine months of
last year.
Erath County registered gross sales of
$66.1 million between July and September of
last year. This total, which was 0.5 percent
below the figure for the same three months of
1987 reflected gains in wholesale trade, trans-
portation and public utilities, and services, and
declines in manufacturing and retail trade.
The third quarter sales figure was 6.4
percent above the value reported for the same
three months of 1986. For the first nine months
of last year, Erath County realized gross sales of
$188.3 millon, a value which was 0.9 percent
greater than the 1987 pace and 7.5 percent
above the total posted in the first three quarters
of 1986.
Bosque County reported $34.5 milion in
gross sales between July and September of last
year. This aggregate represented a gain of 4.4
percent over the same three months of 1987, but
a loss of 5.8 percent when compared to the figure
posted in the third quarter of 1986. For the first
nine months of last year, Bosque County posted
gross sales of $101.1 million. This 1988 value
was 6.2 percent above the aggregate realized in
the same span the year before, but was 2.4
percent below the 1986 total.
Comanche County's third quarter gross
sales figure of $34.7 million was 10.8 percent
above the value realized in the same period in
1987, but was 20.7 percent less than the figure

nine months of last year, Comanche County
aggregated $104.3 million in gross sales. This
value was 17.1 percent above the figure posted
for the same period the year before but was 1.9
percent less than the total for the first three
quarters of 1986.
Eastland County's third quarter sales of
$55.7 million compared favorably to the totals of
$48.5 milion and $52.2 million posted in 1987
and 1986. The January-September total of
$174.3 million was 11.4 percent above the value
posted for the same span the year before, and
0.6 percent greater than the sales aggregate for
the same period two years earlier.
Hamilton County reported gross sales of
$23.6 million for the third quarter of last year.
This value was 1.8 percent greater than the total
posted in the same period in 1987, and 35.3
percent above the aggregate for the same three
months of 1986. Hamilton County's January-
September sales figure of $62.5 million com-
pared favorably to the values of $60.7 million
and $55.8 million posted in the two previous
years.
Building permits down
in City of Stephenville
The City of Stephenville issued 52 build-
ing permits in the first three months of 1989
representing an aggregate value of $846,384.
This dollar value, which was the lowest first
quarter total since 1980, was more than 80
percent less than the figure for the January-
March period of last year, and was 43 percent
below the slow pace set in early 1987.
The number of permits issued between
January and March was 13.3 percent below the
1988 pace and 3.7 percent less than the figure
for the same period two years earlier.
Building permit values are widely used
as indicators of future building activity. How-
ever, since it takes time to complete a project
whose permit is issued in any given month, this
indicator fluctuates widely, and totals over sev-
eral months should be studied for meaningful
comparisons to be made.
