Cross Timbers incomes move higher
Each July, Sales and Marketing Man-
agement magazine publishes estimates of in-
come levels for all counties and municipal areas
in the United States. According to this
publication's most recently released figures,
1988 median household effective buying in-
comes of Erath and surrounding counties were
higher than either of the two previous years.
Erath county reported a median house-
hold income of $17,012 for 1988. This average
was 8.3 percent higher than the figure for the
year before, and 10.6 percent above the statistic
reported for 1986.
Bosque county also noted an increase in
household income, from $17,209 in 1987 to
$18,880 last year. The 1988 estimate was 10.1
percent higher than the figure reported two
years earlier.
Comanche county's 1988 median
household income was estimated to be $14,361.
This value was 4.5 percent greater than the
figure reported for the year before and 5.3 per-
cent above the average noted two years earlier.
Eastland county noted the weakest in-
come growth pattern of the five counties in the
Cross Timbers area. The 1988 estimate of effec-
tive buying income per household was $13,793.
This value was 3.7 percent greater than the
figure reported for 1987 and only 0.3 percent
above the 1986 estimate.
Hamilton county noted $15,022 in
household income for 1988, reflecting growth

rates of 9.7 and 10.9 percent when compared to
1987 and 1986 levels.
Effective buying income is the term used
by Sales and Marketing Management to repre-
sent income from all sources minus personal tax
and nontax payments. This concept is roughly
equivalent to the Commerce Department's defi-
nition of "disposable personal" income. Statis-
tics for the years 1980-1987 were revised down-
ward by this author to be compatible with the
1988 estimate, which reflected a more restric-
tive definition of effective buying income than
was used in earlier years.
Population increases
In a related report, Sales and Marketing
Management magazine, estimated that the
total population of five Cross Timbers counties
reversed a two year downward trend in 1988 to
post a signficicant upturn over the year before.
However, the region's aggregate population
remained slightly below the 1986 figure.
Erath county reported a gain of 600 per-
sons between 1987 and 1988 to post a popula-
tion total of 25,700 for the latter period. The
1988 count was only slightly greater than the
25,600 figure noted in 1986.
Bosque county's population total
slipped from 14,900 in 1986 to 14,800 in 1987,
then rebounded to 15,100 last year. In Coman-
che county, the population grew steadily from
12,900 in 1986 to 13,000 in 1987 to 13,100 in
1988.
Eastland county's 1988 population total
of 19,500 was 300 less than the figure posted the
year before and 400 short of the aggregate
reported two years earlier. Hamilton county's
population stood at 8,500 in both 1987 and
1988. This total was 200 less than the aggregate
reported in 1986.
The total population of the five-county
Cross Timbers area was 81,900 last year. This
figure was 700 higher than the aggregate re-
ported for 1987, but was 100 less than the figure
noted in 1986.lmwag1 Comacthe BePstland Ithb
