= THE BURRO n .... ,
TO OUR BEST ATHLETE
Let us give our flowers to the living, is an expression often heard, and
why shouldn't Mineral Wells High School pin a flower of honor and appre-
ciation upon her favorite son who has so nobly carried her name to fame.
No one asks the question of whom it is; everyone knows the splendid
record that "Dick" Griffin has made in High School through four strenuous
years. Why not stop the mad rush of selfish gains long enough to acknowl-
edge his achievements.
"Dick" has always been a loyal supporter of all school activities and
helping in every way possible. He is a good athlete and what is more, a
true friend. He loves to win, but it must be fair and he never is affected
with the sickening disease known as "swell head."
"Dick" has been in track four years and has been winning in a remark-
able way, for he won second at the State meet several years ago. However,
this year with "Mule" Frazier as a coach, who is on the All-American team,
"Dick" took first place in every race that he entered, including the mile and
half-mile races at the State. This alone is enough to testify to the courage,
clean character and fighting spirit of Griffin, for track is a sport in which
dissipation cannot pass, and the man who wins cannot run a bluff or fool
the coach, for a stop watch in the hands of an expert cannot be cheated.
On the way to the track meets every team that our team chanced to
meet wanted to know if Griffin was coming; if he was not, they at once
planned to take first place in the distance races, but if he was, they imme-
diately changed their ambitions to second place. Such was the fame among
all the schools of Texas of the State champion, "Dick" Griffin.
