THE FOOTBALL SEASON
As a whole the season of 1922 was a very unfortunate one for
Mineral Wells High. No schedule had been previously arranged and
there was some difficulty in getting games. Added to that, some
games that were matched this season were either postponed or called
off. So Mineral Wells only played six games-winning two, losing
three, and tying one. Again, the coach was handicapped on account
of lack of material, and some of the strongest teams in the state were
played at the first of the season-yet no team scored more than 24
points on the Crimson and White, a remarkable record under the
circumstances.
THE STRAWN GAME
The first game of the season was played at Strawn. Although
most of the members of the team were inexperienced, they played like
veterans and when the final whistle sounded the score was 0 to 0.
They showed a marked inefficiency at breaking up passes, as Strawn
completed five passes for a total of 82 yards, but their fighting spirit
made up for this inefficiency. Several times Strawn had the ball
within a few yards of our goal, but the boys tightened and held them.
Once Strawn had the ball on the second down with one foot to go for
a touchdown, but no scoring was done.
THE JACKSBORO GAME
Again Mineral Wells journeyed away from home, this time to the
metropolis of Jacksboro. Here the boys displayed real "stuff" and the
score, 8 to 0, Mineral Wells, does not evidence how badly Jacksboro
was outplayed. Several men even rose to the heights of brilliancy,
one man ran for 52 yards and another for 45. The first quarter was
played in Jacksboro's territory, but the necessary punch could not be
given to carry the ball over. In the second quarter the best playing
was done, bringing the ball down from our territory right across their
line for a touchdown. In the third quarter the Jacksboro back was
hurled for a safety.
At times it seemed that the sideline was not giving Mineral Wells
a square deal, but the score shows which side had the best team.
