33 the people of Dallas of which the DMA can be justly proud.
With NOW/THEN/AGAIN, we present a "retrospective" of contemporary art
at the very center of the museum. Surprisingly, we have learned that, in spite of the
unprecedented space given over to contemporary art in this installation, there is still
not room enough for our entire collection. For example, only one of three dis-
tinguished paintings by Morris Louis is exhibited, and the space occupied by the art
of the last decade is altogether insufficient. In fact, a complete installation of the
collection would require almost twice the indoor space provided by the immense
second floor galleries. This very fact has forced all of us to reassess our respon-
sibilities to the contemporary collection we have formed. If it is to grow and to
maintain its vitality, the collection will need more space and we must be more creative
in our ideas about installation. For us at the DMA, this situation presents challenges
which must be met if we are to continue to be the only museum in the metroplex in
which historical art and contemporary art are equally part of the museum experience.
NOW/THEN/AGAIN has challenged the Dallas Museum of Art and its staff as
much as it will challenge the citizens of Dallas.
