Rain drenches El
The big storm of 2006 for El Paso began Aug. 1
with slow, continuous rains. When it was all
over, the city was drenched with a year's worth
of rain - 15 inches in one day.
Streets flooded, roads crumbled and uprooted plants
and debris created hazardous driving for residents seeking
to escape the storm's effects.
Gov. Rick Perry declared a state of emergency in
El Paso County after surveying the estimated $100
million in damage caused by three days of storms. FederalPaso
disaster status entitles an area to financial help from the
government.
Damage to TxDOT right of way was heavy.
Hundreds of storm-sewers clogged with sand.
Pavement was damaged with potholes. In some cases,
high water washed away pavement.
The El Paso District played a vital role in helping
local officials deal with clean-up efforts. TxDOTU See Page 5
