1 WHEREAS, The United States is the world's largest
2 manufacturing economy, and Texas is the nation's second leading
3 manufacturing state by number of employees and number of
4 manufacturing entities; and
5 WHEREAS, U.S. manufacturing produces $1.6 trillion of value
6 each year, or 11 percent of U.S. Gross Domestic Product; Texas
7 manufacturing contributes $158.8 billion to the economy, or 13
8 percent of Texas Gross State Product, and it has been the leading
9 exporting state for 8 years in a row; manufacturing accounts for 93
10 percent of Texas exports; and
11 WHEREAS, Responsible for more than half of all private sector
12 research and development spending, manufacturers boost the state's
13 economy by promoting innovation, investment, and job creation;
14 manufacturing employs 840,000 Texans, and the average annual salary
15 is almost $76,000; moreover, a multiplier effect leads to the
16 creation of between 2 and 16 additional jobs for each manufacturing
17 job created; and
18 WHEREAS, The broad diversity of products manufactured across
19 the Lone Star State includes, by rank as a percentage of Gross State
20 Product, chemicals, computers and electronics, machinery,
21 petroleum and coal products, food products, aerospace, motor
22 vehicles and parts, and plastics and rubber; Texas produces 60
23 percent of the nation's chemicals, 30 percent of its natural gas,
24 and 19 percent of its oil; and
