World's Fair Service Camp Opens
THE first official act of New
York's Mayor LaGuardia and
World's Fair President Grover
Whalen on opening day, May 11,
was to participate in opening cere-
monies at the Boy Scout Service
Camp where these leaders paid
tribute to the splendid service ren-
dered last year and expressed
renewed pleasure in welcoming
Scouts from all over the country.
Lewis Gawtry, Treasurer of the
Boy Scouts of America, represent-
ing the National Executive Board,
accompanied by Robert P. Sniffen
of the Executive Board, the Mayor
and Mr. Whalen, cut the ribbon
opening the camp gateway. A
Drum and Bugle Corps from the
Queens Council played. Lome W.
Barclay introduced Howard R.
Patton, Camp Director and James
E. Spellman, Camp Chief.
The camp swung into full action
immediately with Scouts serving
as ushers for Opening Ceremonies
of the World's Fair in the Court of
Peace, where a Drum and Bugle
Corps of 1,000 from the Boy Scout
Foundation of Greater New York
played and 3,500 Scouts formed
human flags, directed by Alfred C.
Nichols of the Foundation, cooper-
ating with Elwood Bailey and
Howard Tooley, World's Fair Gen-
eral Director of Special Activities
and Director of Special Events,
respectively.
A new group of 160 Scouts ar-
rives each Monday to assume the
service duties at the World's Fair.
Vacancies Still Open
There is still room for a Troop
or its Patrols to be considered for
certain weeks, because a World's
Fair Camp Troop this year takes
care of forty Scouts and some
Councils have a few vacancies.
Any Troops interested can secure,
through their Local Council, in-
formation from the National Camp-
ing and Activities Service.
NEW YORK WORLD'S FAIR
SERVICE CAMP
'""PHE Scout Camp at the World's Fair
has been set up to house and care for
the Troops of Scouts who are rendering
special Scout service to the Fair and its
guests.
The dining room and kitchen have
been planned and are operated so as to
require a minimum amount of time on
the part of Scouts and not take them
away from their more important respon-
sibilities. All work in the kitchen Is
handled by those employed for that pur-
pose. All work in the dining room is
done by Scouts and Scouters. Every effort
has been made to make available a maxi-
mum opportunity for the real purpose of
the camp and give every Scout and
Scouter participating a chance to render
his share of service and have an op-
portunity for the planned educational ex-
perience which the New York World's
Fair makes possible.
This camp is not intended primarily as
a demonstration of Scout camping as
carried on by Troops in Council camps,
but is designed as were our camps at the
National Jamboree and the World Jam-
borees in Europe to meet conditions in
a practical fashion for the accomplish-
ment of a specific purpose.
