In a recent conversation rcardin; the action
cf ticvernor Ncff abolishing the taianl of partlon.
and an intimation th.it the suspended sentence
law of Text might be expected to follow Pis-
trict Attorney W. I!. Ch-'ldrrs dal.tred that in his
judgment more harm than good w ill rcsu't. He
called attention to the fart that often time a
pardon should b granted and intimated that
much rood is jKsihlc through the suspencd sen-
tence hw.
This tnrd ly Mr. Childcrs is to Ik? commend-
ed. While? he i the legal representative of the
State in all case wherein persons arc accused of
crime in this district the people of the jurisdiction
must appreciate the fact that he is still human.
It seems fair to issume that Mr. Giil.lers recog-
nizes the fact that even though a jcrson i ac-
cused of or is even overtaken in a fault he is still
a fellow mortal deserving of sonic consideration.
The people of th;s district arc to be congratulated
that they are represented by a man who has
passrj from under the Mosaical regime and un-
der the merciful provisions of the philosophy of
the NVarenc. The first demanded that an eye
for an eye shculd be the measure of punishment
but the bttcr declares for mercy to be blended
with justice.
Repeal the mspended sentence law abolish
the board of pardons "make it rough" for crim-
inals and thereby lessen and finally remove crime
from the earth I This seems to be the idea of
.ome but will it work? As a matter of fact
those states have shown best results whose penal
institutions have been under the supervision tf
men of a type siir.tlar t Warden Tom Tynan of
Colorado In the Colorado penitentiary mrn
are put on the -honor" system and results ob-
tained have been httle less than startling when
viewed in the liht of the salvage of the human
wreckage jessing undrr the hands of a man who
studies and governs this unfortunate mass of hu-
manity with a view to restoration.
Those responsible for the enactment of thr
suspended sentence law. seemed to be determined
to carry into the criminal statutes of the state
some reflections t ( Christian civilization and may
the time never cjome when it shall !e repealed.
.lltose who have excused the pardoning power
svhiie perhaps "mr tloinir a rood thine" srmc
tt times are to be thought of in connection with thr
'; beatitude: Tlesscd are the merciful for they
shall obtain mercy."
No people as a whole has ever erred on the
side of mercy and it is refreshing to i;ute that
Mr. Childrrs of Amarllo is staunch in his regard
for not only the legal but the human rights of
those accused of crime in the light of a twentieth
century of civi!iat;op. permeated by the mercies
of the Christian religion.

Blaming the company furnishing water M

getting the answer to the question. The answer
will be found in unanimity of desire and action
as touching the water supply.

Let it be remembered that while the prohibi-
