Room and New Piano Have
Lately Been Added.
Prof. M. Blair Autry principal of
the Mlliioan school Informs The
Ea'gle that the school Is progressing
nicely.' Amdng some of the improve-
ments mentioned are a sanitary water
tank a new music room and an ele-
gant new piano.
The school gave a box supper on
last Friday night from which the
neat sum of $92.60 was realized. This
sum will be used in enlarging the
school library in part the balance to
be applied on the payment of the
piano. The patrons and friends of the
school in the community have also
donated the sum of $60 to be applied
on the piano.
The people of Mlllican are wide-
awake to their educational interests
and are doing everything possible to
further the interests of the school.

The Bryan Telephone Company Is
making a number of changes and im-
provements at College and recently
purchased the Dr. Carter office build-
ing there for a new central office.
The building purchased has been
moved to a new location which will
be the permanent home of the tele-
phone company and is being enlarged
and otherwise improved. An addi-
tional switchboard will be installed
and considerable cable strung on new
poleB. Altogether the telephone com
pany will expend from $1500 to $2000
for present improvement on Its col-
lege plant

Milwaukee Wis. Oct. 15. Colonei
Roosevelt was shot by a man said by
some to be a socialist last night Just
as he was leaving the Hotel Gilpatrlck
for the auditorium. His injuries are
said to be trifling.
Henry P. Cochems chairman of the
speakers' bureau of the progressive
party captured the would-be assassin
and it required the services of four
policemen to keep him from being
dealt with summarily.
The colonel asked to have the man
brought to him and when the would-
be assassin was asked why he fired
the shot no reply waB offered.
Roosevelt Goes to Chicago.

velt's physician Dr. Toccell of Dallas
said this morning:
'The wound is o Eimple one but
dangerous on account of blood poison-
ing possibility. Colt nel Roosevelt has
a phenomenal development of the
chest. It to largp'y due to this fact
that he is a physical mBrvel and that
he is not fatally wounded. He is one
of the ntort powerful men I have ever
seen laioiin operating table. The
bullet lIgeJMn $0 massive muscles

lung.. 'Tie bulfet was of .38-callbre
and the impact knocked Colonel
Roosevelt into a sitting position in
his auto.
"His counsin Philip beside him
pleaded: 'Sit still sit still.' Colonel
Roosevelt replied: 'No I will stand
up. Don't let anyone hurt that man.'
A moment later when asked to go to
a hospital Colonel Roosevelt said: 'I
will speak If it kills me. I will speak
if I fall on the platform. I have a mes
sage to deliver.'
"Colonel Roosevelt himself with a
handkerchief stanched the wound ob-
serving: 'It looks like a shot from a
thirty-eight.' "
Arriving here this morning after a
restful nlght'B sleep on the train he
saw an ambulance but declined to go
to the hospital in it and walked to an
automobile.

Colonel Roosevelt's would-be assassin
has lived for the past nine months in
a hotel Just off the Bowery where he
was known as Quirt and was un-
assuming. His father was an old-time
Elizabeth street saloonkeeper.
All Speaking Dates Cancelled.

Chicago Oct. 15. After an exami-
nation of Colonel Roosevelt's wound
by some of the best surgeons in Chi-
cago it was announced that the bul-
let did not penetrate the lung and
that probably no operation will be
necessary.
All the remaining campaign dates
have been cancelled though Colonel
Roosevelt may make one speech in
New York.
Colonel Roosevelt's private sten-
ographer Albert R. Martin who un-
doubtedly saved the colonel's life by
quickly grappling with the would-be
assassin is a young man who ob-
tained fcls present Job by applying at
the national progressive headquarters
in AuguBt for work. "Colonel Roose-
velt took a liking to him because "he
looked as If he had a punch."
Testing Bullets for Poison.

court ordered the remaining bullets
in Scrank's p3tol examined to make
sure they were not poisoned.

nounced this afternoon that Colonel
Roosevelt's wound was serious.

Issued a statement giving an "expres-
sion of horror at the act of the maniac
who attempted to assassinate Colonel
Roosevelt."
Able to Sit Up and Eat.

velt sat up in bed this afternoon eat-
ing toast drinking tea and reading
Maccauley's Essays. It was announced
that he would still be in active charge
of bis campaign. Mrs. Roosevelt will
arrive tomorrow.
As Colonel Roosevelt stepped from
the train here this morning a battery
of flashlight men photographed him
and he exclaimed: "Gosh! shot again."
The doctors say Colonel Roosevelt
must remain In bed several days.
