The Ideas Committee, working with the Pack
Leaders, may be fortunate enough to plan the
outdoor Pack meeting on a site of some historical
significance. They might secure the help of local
societies in furnishing historical stories or speakers.
In some cases, these may be dramatized in costumes.
Members of the fire department, police department,
and other agencies, may attend the Pack meeting
to show and explain old equipment, and describe
headline events of the community's past.
Pre-Opening Stunts
While folks gather there should be a place for
Dens to set up and explain their neighborhood maps
or miniatures. Along with this, it will be interesting
to see what the boys can collect showing the present
status of the community life and its industries.
If this outdoor Pack meeting is going to be fun,
there will have to be some games for everybody.
Try a Fishing Derby. Mom, Dad and Jimmy to-
gether hold a long bamboo pole with a fish line to
which is fastened a fairly large blunt hook. With
this they hook their lunch ticket in the shape of a
fish, which has a 2-inch ring in its nose.
Father and son teams try Keg Gold Course. They
alternate underhand throws of a soft ball and record
their total score on a board at the end of the course.
Lowest score wins. (See illustration).
In another corner of the field is the Cub Scout
Hammer Throwing Contest. Here strong bags with
about 2 pounds of sand or beans are secured to a
2-foot rope, knotted at the end. These are swung
underhand for distance, or to a target area as shown.
Divided Meetings
Parents' Meeting. Organization plans for Sep-
tember should be discussed briefly so all concerned
are aware of any need for new Dens or leaders. Den
Mothers report on the special activities they tried.
Suggest that these are still good for use in August.
Boys' Meeting. Boys will be busy preparing for
their stunts. If time allows, play a game like "Fumble
out."
Main Part of the Meeting
Open with a rousing song fest and simple flag
ceremony. Call on Dens for their stunts. (First
settlers, first school, village store, the first horseless
buggy in town, etc.) Find an old-timer or better yet,
have someone dress like an old-timer to relate some
early historical events. Report any Den good deeds.
Introduce new visitors and award any badges boys
have earned. Close with a Grand Howl.
Let's Eat
A committee of Moms and Dads arrange in ad-
vance for frankfurters and buns, ice cream, potato
salad and chips.
