look back on my school days
like one looks back on an operation
— an unpleasant but necessary period
that was a great relief when it was
over. My Scouting life, on the other
hand, was the only disciplined phase
of my youth that I enjoyed every bit
as much then as I do in warm and
happy retrospect now.
I joined the Boy Scouts while at
school in Pasadena, California, when
I was twelve. I confess I did not join
from a fervent desire to win merit
badges or even with any conscious
intention of becoming a better citizen.
I joined purely and simply because
the very pretty "girl next door" fa-
vored a classmate who was a Scout,
and I felt I had no future in her
eyes unless I, too, joined up. I was
right.
My career in the Scouts gave me
considerable pleasure, and the know-
ledge and crafts acquired then were
to serve me well.
Often, whether during war service
or in civilian life where one is apt
to meet with adventures and situations
of every sort, I have found myself
saying, "I first learned this or that,
or the other thing, in the Boy Scouts."
