coran, of Missouri. They were subsequently
ordered to Nashville, Tennessee, and participated
in the battle of Franklin, and at that
time Captain Harkey was guarding the
wagon train, twenty-four hours late, from the
battle of Altoona. He was made commander
of the regiment, and at Nashville was in
command of the brigade. His command was
seven miles below the town on the river on
out-post duty; being first attacked, fought
them until he reached the main line, and his
brigade was the first to fire a shot in the battle
of Nashville. After the battle he was offered
the office of Colonel, but refused to accept.
After the battle of Nashville he went on to
Memphis, where they went into winter quarters,
and he remained with his command
until it was ordered into North Carolina, and
receiving $ furlough for ninety days, returned
home. After his arrival he found his
father very sick, and he died at tie end of
the Captain's furlough. About this time
General Lee surrendered, and Captain
Harkey never returned to the army. After
the close of the war he had $5 in gold left,
and he commenced to buy cotton, and in fifteen
days made about $200. He then engaged
in farming, and also conducted a blacksmith
and wagon shop, but the next year he
gave his attention entirely to farming. In
1869 he engaged in the mercantile business,
in connection with his other interests; but
in 1870 he decided to come to this county,
and after his arrival he bought 200 acres of
his present farm. He has since added to this
place until he now owns 487 acres, 165 acres
of which are under a fine state of cultivation.Mr. Harkey was married, in 1859, to Miss
Elizabeth A. Crigler, a daughter of Colmnbus
C. and Malinda (Warren) Crigler, natives
of Newton county, Missouri, and early settlers
of Texas. Mr. and Mrs. Harkey had
eight children, viz.: Henry H., who is engaged
in the tea and coffee business in San
Francisco, California; Josiah M., pf this
county; Catherine, deceased; Edwin E., in
the employ of the Missouri, Kansas & Texas
Railroad; Laura, May M., Orah O., Ella
and Robert H. The wife and mother died
in 1885; and in 1887 Mr. Harkey was
married to Mrs. Fannie M. May, a daughter
of Jackson and Mattie (Kennerly) Penn,
natives of Virginia. By her first husband
Mrs. Harkey is the mother of four
children: Mattie L., wife of Judge W. A.
Ford, of Martinsville, Virginia; Penn J.;
Bettie L., at home, and Hattie, wife of Marvin
Cliff. Mr. and Mrs. Harkey are members
of the Methodist Episcopal Church,
and the former has been a member of the
Masonic order since 1863.
