CHANGED CONCEPTION
Nelda Patterson
WAR is a vague dream concocted to
furnish new material for Father's
nightly campaign to keep the
car at home.
Under its influence I turn my gaze from
the shop windows and
clutch a war bond with wavering patriotism.
WAR means the vision of Him in a
uniform-with shiny brass buttons
outranked by the illumination of a rare smile.
WAR brings exciting epistles
(marked "free") from camp, intricately
addressed in a well-known scrawl.
WAR is a brutal reality that converts
thriving cities into crumbled
walls and sand-bagged shelters.
WAR sends a shrieking shell to stifle the
sobs of an abandoned baby.
WAR urges an endless column of boots
onward through sucking mire
and entangled wire.
WAR stares up from a yellow sheet of
paper imprinted permanently
with the message: "KILLED-IN ACTION."
