DEPARTMENT OF THE TREASURY
UNITED STATES SECRET SERVICE
OFFICE OF THE DIRECTOR
September 27, 197 6
Police Chief
Dallas Police Department
Dallas, Texas
Dear Sir:
The United States Secret Service is presently involved
in a Freedom of Information Act lawsuit with Mark Lane
concerning disclosure from Secret Service files of informa-
tion relating to the assassination of John F. Kennedy and the
resulting investigation by the Warren Commission. The
Secret Service is now in the process of disclosing to Mr.
Lane information in the Secret Service files regarding the
assassination and the Warrren Commission investigation.
During preparation for the disclosure of Secret Service
documents, certain papers initiated by the Dallas Police
Department during the investigation of the Kennedy assassi-
nation were discovered in the Secret Service files. Under
the Freedom of Information Act and Treasury regulations, the
Secret Service may make its own determination on disclosure
of these records. However, even though the Freedom of
Information Act applies only to Federal Agencies, we would
like for you to have the opportunity to examine these docu-
ments and determine whether or not any of them should be
withheld from public scrutiny. Your advice on this matter
will assist in our determination.
Attached to this letter is a copy of certain documents
found in the Secret Service files. In addition to the
attached documents the following are also located in Secret
Service files:
1. Dallas Police Chief Curry's transcript of
police radio (Secret Service document no. 10);
2. Investigation of General Evan Walker
incident by Dallas Police Department;
3. Arrest - fingerprints of Lee Harvey Oswald
(Secret Service document no. 3);
