Erosion Control Is Also Pollution Control
m
The biggest portion of the pollution in our lakes and small reservoirs is silt or MUD. It comes from sloping fields, pastures and
city lots. Every acre not receiving good land treatmmt contributes silt—mud -pollution.
Tax dollars and private dollars are more effectively used in tying down topsail at home than when they are spent in removing
it from roads, streets and water supplies. As soil erodes, so goes crop production and income.
The photo above shows good land which is worth protecting. Errosion scars could be healed by conservation practices. Grassed
waterways, terraces, contour cultivation, good crop rotations and proper crop residue management would prevent this erosion.
Lower photo shows the same class of land with good treatment. Gerald Furr of Rhea Mills, a district cooperator, has applied
the above practices on his land.
