support the Allies' war effort. The Hillsboro Mirror,

running up the contributions to the Red Cross,
Salvation Army, and the YMCA"3
In 1920, Baylor University conferred on Knott
an honorary doctorate based largely on his war
cartoons. In bestowing the degree, Baylor President
Samuel P. Brooks remarked, "I have heard it said
many times, and have echoed it on many an occasion,
that, in my judgment, no single man in Texas

Knott's cartoons were popular and effective
because, more times than not, they met the criteria by
which outstanding cartoons are judged: they were
clear and understandable at a glance; they were
skillfully drawn and witty; and they reflected a firm
understanding of the issues at hand. 5 To this list Dick
West added that Knott had the knack to draw
cartoons which reproduced beautifully on newsprint.16
