It's tough. It's hard."
The man facing the roomful of high school
students is describing the realities of work
as a vocal musician.
"You stand in line for one part and you audi-
tion; and you stand in line again, over and over
again."
The students listen. Dr. Floyd Hedburg, chair-
man of the music department and director of
choral music at Washburn University, knows what
he's talking about. It isn't necessarily a world of
instant stardom, fantastic salaries, and glittering
costumes. But some who sat in this same choral
room at Topeka (Kan.) High have made "a
comfortable living" in vocal performance—this
