Great American Smokeout
Smoking cigarettes is no laughing matter;
neither is quitting. Once a year, however,
thousands of serious quitters do have some
fun as they try to make it through the day
without a cigarette. The occasion is the
Great American Smokeout, an annual
celebration when the American Cancer
Society urges smokers to go a full 24 hours
without cigarettes. This year's Smokeout is
scheduled for Thursday, Nov. 17.
Good times are the order of the day.
Festivities designed to amuse smokers, lift
spirits, and keep minds off cigarettes will
be in full force. Volunteers of the Amer-
ican Cancer Society will be at shopping
centers, parks, and downtown areas to
offer tips on quitting and moral support.
Would-be quitters will receive pledge
cards and stickers that announce their
intentions (e.g. "It Ain't Easy, But I'm
Trying").
"Adopt A Smoker" proceedings will
pair nonsmokers with smokers in a buddy
system attempt to quit smoking. "Adop-
tion papers" will be available from local
units of the American Cancer Society.
The Surgeon General has labeled
cigarette smoking the "chief avoidable
cause of death in our society." Statistics
bear this out. Smoking has been shown to
be responsible for more than 75 percent of
all lung cancer, the number one cancer
killer of men. By the end of the '80s, lung
cancer is expected to replace breast cancer
as the number one cause of cancer death
among women.
Actor Larry Hagman of the TV series,
"Dallas," will serve as chairman of the
Great American Smokeout for the third
year. The Smokeout, now in its seventh
year, continues to make an enormous
impact on smokers. Last year, according to
a Gallup study, three out of 10 cigarette
smokers either cut down or cut out smok-
ing for the day. Close to 4.5 million
smokers actually quit for the day. About
2.3 million of these quitters were still not
smoking one to 11 days later. ■

SELLING POLICY
Certain advertising in this magazine
contains offers of sales plans for individ-
ual or unit use. It must be clearly under-
stood that Scout unit use of these plans
to earn money must first be cleared with
the unit's local council and chartered in-
stitution. Ask for BSA Form No. 4427, from
your council.
The selling of any product must be
done on its own merits. Selling must not
be done in uniform or in the name of the
Boy Scouts of America except for non-
commercial products and then only when
approved by the local council. Sales in
uniform of commercial products violates
our policy of not permitting the move-
ment to be used for commercial pur-
poses. No one, unless authorized by the
National Council Executive Board, may
sign a contract of a commercial charac-
ter involving the Boy Scouts of America
or any chartered unit of the Boy Scouts of
America or for use of any of our insignia
or terminology with the product.
The products offered in these adver-
tisements have been examined by Scout-
ing magazine, and to the best of our
knowledge their value is commensurate
with the selling price suggested. All ad-
vertisers in this section are familiar with
the official policies of the Boy Scouts of
America and have indicated their willing-
ness to abide by them. Any Scouter re-
ceiving information or literature that is in
conflict with our policies should immedi-
ately notify Scouting Magazine, 1325 Walnut
