PRIOR TO THE OPENING
of the 1971 World Jamboree
in Japan, a cultural culinary
catastrophe arose within a
Massachusetts contingent. The
36 Scouts, voracious eaters all, sud-
denly developed aversions to Japanese
food at preselected tour restaurants.
Turned out they were turned off
after having seen Japanese eat
skewers of squiggly octopus available
from street vendors. Their adult leader
promised to find someone at each eat-
ing place who could identify all food
before the meal began.
All went well until the evening meal
before the jamboree. When no En-
glish-speaking Japanese could be found
in the restaurant, the contingent
leader tasted the food and said he was
