FILMFARE. Follow Me,
Boys !, starring Fred Mac-
Murray, has been re-re-
leased by Disney Studios.
Based on McKinlay Kantor's
book, God and My Country,
this funny, yet often
touching, movie tells the
story of Scoutmaster Lem
Siddons and his life in a
small midwestern town. Fol-
low Me, Boys I is recom-
mended as wholesome family
entertainment for Cubs,
Scouts or Explorers.
Man in the Wilderness,
starring Richard Harris, is
a different Western, based
on fact and produced by
38 Warner Brothers. The sur-
vival techniques portrayed
are classified as techni-
cally correct by Ken Cole,
BSA survival expert (see
"Wilderness Survival," Oc-
tober 1971 Scouting Maga-
zine ). The picture is rated
GP and is recommended for
older Scouts or Explorer-
age audiences.
BOOK BROWSING. The new Maine-
Matagamon National Wilderness Base
(see story on page 18) is located in one
of the few remaining wilderness areas
of our nation. Here are two hooks that
can help Explorers and older Scouts
gain a greater feeling for and under-
standing of this historic area:
The Allagash by Lew Dietz, Ilolt, Rine-
hart and Winston. Dept. SM, 383 Madi-
son Avenue, New York, N.Y. 10017, 262
pages, $7.50. An absorbing, colorful
tale of the rugged Maine lumbermen,
intertwined with the story of the Alla-
gash River that flows northward 100
miles through unbroken forest. Bangor
"stole" Allagash water by installing a
lock dam at Chamberlain Lake and
causing the Allagash headwaters to flow
south into the Penobscot watershed. The
people who built this story make it live
—the Maine Indians; David Pingree,
the first big landowner; Eben Cole, the
young engineer who thought up the
dam; famed naturalist Henry Thoreau,
whose books about this country first
made it famous; Sarah "Medicine
Woman" Taggett, Mho could midwife a
baby, sew on a lumberman's ear or re-
move bottle glass from a logger's skull;
and many other characters. One of a
58-book Rivers of America series.
F( rcst Life and Forest Trees by John
S. Springer, New Hampshire Publishing
Company, Dept. SM, 1 Market Street,
Somersworth, N.H. 03878, 292 pages,
$6.95. A classic of the Maine forests and
lumberman's life in the mid-1850's,
filled with gripping stories of log jams,
floods, fires, fights, wild animals and
other dangers. Ideal to read before vis-
iting the famous Lumberman's Museum
in Patten, Me., a few miles from the
Maine-Matagamon base.
