watch could have a negative effect—that
is, turn them off from Scouting.
Possibly someone should be delegated
to lead the siblings in activities that will
keep them from underfoot. If these activi-
ties point them toward eventually becom-
ing Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts, so much
the better.

The thing to remember is that if siblings
are not permitted, we may not have
leaders at all. I know that as a single
parent with two sons—one in Cub Scout-
ing, one younger—that I would not have
been able to volunteer my time the past
three years if I were not able to bring my
smaller child to Scouting events from time
to time. I always try to use my best judg-
ment on these occasions and doubt that
other leaders think it inappropriate.
This, I think, can be a lesson to the
other boys. They can see that even though
I have another responsibility, my younger
son, I still have time for them. Teaching
about life and being responsible is what
we're about, right?

I took my den last year when no one else
would, in spite of having a new daughter,
and was able to be a day camp leader only
because our council provided day care.
The time away from my job I gave will-
ingly and without reimbursement so my
Cub Scouts could go to camp.
Maybe if you find "future Scouts"
disruptive, you could set up babysitting
for them. You might try a Junior Girl
Scout troop working on their Child Care
badge.
Den Leader S. C.
Carrollton, Tex.
When leaders with younger children are
willing to put in their time, a support
system should be developed for them.
As the pack committee chairman as
well as a den leader, I emphasize that pack
meetings are for families. We require
parental participation, and encourage sib-
ling participation, in nearly all of our ac-
tivities.
At pack meetings, our room arrange-
ment calls for parents and siblings to sit
behind their Cub Scout's den. We don't
allow anyone to sit elsewhere in the room.
Things are orderly and surprisingly, we
don't have siblings running around as be-
fore. We also don't have parents gathering
in the back and disrupting the meeting by
talking.
