This Webelos Scout Helps booklet is
designed to give the Webelos den leader
the outline for a full year of fun-filled and
educational activities for a Webelos den.
The purpose is to make planning as easy as
possible by providing a skeleton of sugges-
tions for den meeting activities and prepa-
ration for the monthly pack meetings and
other activities.
The booklet includes den meeting out-
lines for the twenty activity badges that
may be featured from September 1996
through August 1997.
For each month, four den meetings or
other den events are sketched out in some
detail. Each monthly program is centered
on one of the twenty activity badges that
Webelos Scouts may earn. For each den
meeting there are ideas for games, cere-
monies, gathering-time activities, and
preparations for the pack meetings.
A particular activity badge is suggested
for each month's focus, with some excep-
tions. Craftsman, Scientist, Citizen, and
Engineer, which need more than four den
meetings for complete coverage, are each
scheduled for two months.
Don't hesitate to adapt the schedule
according to your den's needs and inter-
ests. But there are reasons for the order in
which particular badges are highlighted.
At your district's monthly Cub Scout
leader's roundtable, program ideas will be
shared for the following month's recom-
mended badge. And so, if you are following
the suggested order for the activity
badges, you will get specific badge help at
the roundtable.
A second reason is to be sure that all of
the required activity badges and activity
badge groups for the Webelos Badge and
Arrow of Light Award are covered in
Webelos den meeting programs and activi-
ties. So, remember, if you decide to switch
activity badges around, be sure that you
are not eliminating a badge that your
Webelos Scouts will need for rank
advancement.
In planning your Webelos den year, be
sure to include in your monthly program
certain features that will tie in with pack
activities that will affect your Webelos
Scouts. Such big events as the pinewood
derby are not mentioned in the Webelos
den meeting outlines. But your Webelos
Scouts will want to take part. So be sure to
keep them informed and distribute the
derby kits in time for them to make their
racers.
Through Webelos Scout Helps, you will
see frequent references to various Cub
Scouting books, such as the Cub Scout
Leader Book, Cub Scout Leader How-To
Book, Webelos Den Activities, and Cub Scout
Songbook. In addition, you will note occa-
sional references to Cub Scout Program
Helps, which goes to your Cubmaster and
the leaders of Cub Scout dens. Check the
references each month at your pack lead-
ers' meeting when the program for the
