Labor and Scouting (from pane 74)
cost $50 apiece — and 1,000 are sold.
The entire $50,000 is given to help
support Scouting in New York City.
Looking back on more than 20 years
of this kind of involvement in Scouting,
Harry Van Arsdale says the experience
has had practical as well as other
values for Local 3. "A Scouting pro-
gram," he says, "is a way to achieve a
union's community goals. It gives union
members the chance to work with
youngsters and help shape their char-
acter by sharing attitudes and objec-
tives with the next generation of
American labor. And the union widens
its impact on the community as a civic-
minded, forward-looking organiza-
tion."
"I call upon all local unions to accept
this challenge and opportunity to pro-
vide leadership and counseling to the
youth of America," IBEW President
Charles E. Pillard has said. Adds Bert
Zaretsky: "You help a kid who might
never have known about Scouting,
then you see Scouting helping him, and
you walk away feeling 10 feet tall.' ■
The IBEW, in cooperation with the
AFL-CIO Department of Community
Services, has made available a
pamphlet and filmstrip entitled IBEW
and Scouting. A showing of this film-
strip can be arranged through your
local Scout council.
Programs similar to IBEW's have
been developed with the following in-
ternational unions: American Postal
Workers, International Association of
Fire Fighters, International Brother-
hood of Painters and Allied Trades and
United Association of Plumbers.
Pamphlets describing these programs
are available from Labor Belation-
ships, Boy Scouts of America, North
Brunswick, N.J. 08902. These pam-
phlets spell out how a local union can
become involved in chartering a Cub,
Scout or Exploring unit. In brief, they
are:
• Contact your local Scout council and
ask its staff to send a representative
to a meeting of your executive board
to explain the Scouting program.
• Formally adopt the program, by ac-
tion of the executive board.
• Survey your membership, seek out
members who are active in Scouting
and solicit their help in organizing
your units.
• Appoint a Scouting coordinator.
• The local Scout council will provide
assistance and guidance in organizing
your Scouting units.
