Dara reaches down and scratches his head and
snout and then moves over to the stalls beside the
bear. Three donkeys stick their heads out for some
of the same treatment. In a corner of the barn, two
baby wolf pups yelp a greeting and Dara goes over
to pet them. Nearby, the frantic scurrying of what
sounds like rats scuttling across an attic is actually
a cage full of South American Tamarins an-
nouncing they're awake and ready to be fed.
Certainly no ordinary barn. It's part of the
Akron Zoological Park located in the heart of
Akron, Ohio. And Dara Manes is one of several
Explorers from Veterinary Medicine Post 2294
who volunteer at the zoo for what amounts to their
first zookeeping experience and an exciting in-
troduction to the world of animals.
"The post gives me a chance to work with
animals," Dara says as she releases the donkeys
into their outside pen so she can clean out their
stalls. "It gives me a chance to work at a zoo. I
don't think very many kids have that opportu-
nity."
