The Inside Story-
Goodbye, summer. Hello school. It's
time to put away the suntan lotion and
the beachball, drag out the books, and
get those mental batteries charged up
for another busy, demanding round of
fall activities.
To help you get serious about your
future and put you in the proper mood
for work and study, check out our ex-
citing lineup of career-oriented articles
in this issue. For instance:
• If you're interested in communica-
tions, Post 932 of Syracuse, N.Y., defi-
nitely has some news for you. Post
members turn out one of the country's
classiest youth newspapers. In the
process, they help young reporters
and editors decide if a career in jour-
nalism is right for them. Their story is
on page 3.
• And talk about exciting professions!
Take a trip with three young people to
volatile, unpredictable Mount St.
Helens to find out how geologists,
wildlife specialists, and foresters are
working to repair the damage caused
by the volcano's eruptions and study-
ing their long-term effects on the
environment. You'll find the story on
page 8.
• Let Mike Economy give you some
vital tips about careers in the nation's
fast-growing high-tech industries.
Mike's only 23, but as a product engi-
neer for a leading manufacturer of
semiconductor chips, he was able to
walk out of college and step into a
$30,000-a-year job. If you'd like to
learn how to "get in the chips" your-
self, turn to page 14.
But not even September should
mean all work and no play for Ex-
plorers, and this issue is well-stocked
with "fun stuff," too. This month's
record column is on page 10. It fea-
tures reviews of albums by the Moody
Blues, Eric Johnson, Bob Seger, and
the Pet Shop Boys.
And don't miss our adventurous
cover story about a favorite traditional
activity for the BSA's Explorers in
Central America—a race from ocean
to ocean through the Panama Canal. It
starts on page 21.
Rounding out this final issue of Ex-
ploring for 1986 is a report from the
Explorer Presidents' Association Con-
gress held near Washington, D.C., in
July. Get the scoop on Exploring's new
national officers for the next two
years.
So welcome back, everybody. 'Tis
the season to start reading, and good
reading starts right here.
