lation that the ones who received the caps would be responsible for the
condition of them upon their return. Our records do not state the first
name of Professor HALL. However, a N. C. HALL joined the- Odd Fellows on
December 19, 1859 and he stated he was a carpenter and a school teacher.
Possibly this was the same man.
We know this school lasted nine years and had at least one graduating
class. After only thirteen (13) years of this lodge's existence in Tyler,
it had achieved one of the goals of Odd Fellows: EDUCATION.
The other story happened on January 3,1857, when a committee was
appointed to investigate the petition of J. H. WHITLOCK. The committee
returned a report which was unanimousTy-adopted.In the words of the secretary,
J. M. SEETON, "A motion was made, seconded and carried by a unanimous vote of
the lodge that the report of the committee be spread upon the minutes."
Report- We the undersigned committee on the petition of J. H. WHITLOCK
beg leave to submit the following: That we have ascertained that the candidate
has left the State under rather suspicious circumstances and has left
one of your committee if not others minus a few dimes which offense is against
the peace and dignity of the State of Texas. We therefore report unfavorably.
A motion was made, seconded and carried that the ballot be taken on the
petition of J. H. WHITLOCK, after which he was declared constitutionally and
unanimously rejected by seventeen black balls and one bullet.
More short stories and history of Tyler will be printed in a book I am
writing named: "History of Odd Fellowship in Tyler." It will give 141 years
of names, places, and events that occurred during this period.
William Tell Lodge No. 27 is proud to present to you 135 names that were
members of our lodge from 1852-65.
