tainment in addition to singing. Both became tradition in the years to
come. Dr. Patterson holds the record for serving as Sing MC, appearing
in 1964, 1966, and 1976. For the first
time in 1965, there was a mixed division in the Sing. It was
won by two social clubs (Tri Phi and Tau Alpha Phi)
which had combined forces in selections from
Showboat after having also sung in their
respective divisions! In 1966, the
ROTC and Sponsors entered Sing
for the first time, winning the
mixed division trophy
and establishing
control over
that division
for the next two
years. The sixth
All School Sing in
1967 marked the
beginning of a more
"extensive use of stage
lights, props, curtains,
and backdrops." A $25
prize was also added for the
winner in each division.
The year 1967 was a
turning point for the All School
Sing. For the first time the Sing
was presented in conjunction with
Homecoming in the fall. It was also
the year that saw two Sings in one
calendar year - the reason being that
this was the thirty-second All
School Sing since 1962. The fortunes
of the Sing rose, and with
them the prizes in 1968 were
raised to $40 and in 1971 to $50.
Admission remained at $1.00,
however, until 1972 when it was
raised to $2.00 for adults and
$1.00 for students.
Another dramatic change came
for the All School Sing in
1973, when Parents Day and
Homecoming were combined
for the first time, creating the
necessity for two performances
of the Sing. The
following year brought
sweeping changes in the
judging and prizes given
the winners. For the first time points
were awarded for costumes and choreography, the
music fraternities having been reluctant to abandon in any way the
original intent of Sing - the encouragement of singing among campus5
