S ingle parenting with
two children can be
tiring as well as full of
excitement. Adding 15 to
20 charges to that task
could seem insurmountable.
Scott Roppe, obtaining
a second degree, this
time in elementary education,
said single-parenting,
however, has magnified his
"with-it-ness" in the classroom."You grow eyes in the
back of your head. They
call it with-it-ness in educational
circles," he said. "I
think being a single parent...makes
it easier for me
in the classroom to pick out
the kids that are doing
something they shouldn't
be, and even pick out the
kids who are doing what
they should- catch 'em in
the act of being good."
Scott is from Vermont,in the thirty-something
generation and a widower.
His two young boys have
been without their mother
since she died of cancer
about three years ago.
Scott became engaged
recently, so the boys have a
different female influence.
The teaching seed was
planted in his mind when
he first graduated from college."About 12 years after
people told me I should've,
I finally listened. It was
admonition by people who
cared and said, 'You could
probably make a difference-go
ahead and try,"'
Scott said. "That's what
people guided me to do
from the superintendent in
Vermont...to my parents to
people here."
