Objectives
The courses in Philosophy are designed
to stimulate and develop thinking, to
broaden perspectives, and to encourage
the pursuit of truth. Their aim is to build a
wholesome philosophy of life and world
view.
Minor
A minor in Philosophy, consisting of 18
semester hours in Philosophy, is available
on the Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of
Behavioral Science degrees.
Courses in Philosophy (PHIL)
2199, 2299, 2399 Special Topics
Variable credit may be given. This course may
be repeated for credit if the content of the
course is changed.
2331 Introduction to Philosophy (3-3-0)
A study of philosophical concepts and of philosophical
problems from various viewpoints.
Intended to prepare the student for further
study of philosophical problems and solutions
offered by different schools of thought.
2332 Logic (3-3-0)
An introduction to the skill of philosophical
thinking with special attention to the nature and
uses of language, deductive systems, and
inductive reasoning.
2333 Social and Health Care Ethics
An introduction to selected moral issues in the
social and health care sciences. The relevance
of practical logic and ethical theories is considered. Possible moral issues include abortion,
death, euthanasia, genetics, poverty and
hunger, punishment, sex, suicide, and war.
3304 Directed Studies
Advanced study in a special topic or problem
of philosophy. Outside readings, written and/or
oral reports, research paper. May be repeated
as topic changes.
Prerequisite: Consent of instructor.
3333 Ethics (3-3-0)
An attempt to develop ability to reason carefully
about value and obligation, what is good and
bad, and what is right and wrong. Classical
positions as well as modern problems are
considered.
3334 History of Philosophy: Ancient and
Medieval (3-3-0)
A chronological study from primary sources
covering the classical and medieval eras.
3335 History of Philosophy: Modern and
Contemporary (3-3-0)
A chronological study from primary sources
covering the renaissance to the present.
4336 Philosophy of Religion (3-3-0)
Philosophical thinking about religion with particular
focus on the Judeo-Christian religions.
Major attention given to religion, epistemology,
the arguments for the existence of God, and the
problem of evil and suffering.
4337 Problems and Topics (3-3-0)
Course content determined in consultation with
enrollees. Possible topics: Metaphysics, epistemology,
aesthetics, linguistics, existentialism,
science, history, and politics. May be repeated
