1700 (3-3-0)
A survey of western civilization from the beginning
of the eighteenth century as the national
states take on modern form, the industrial revolution
develops, and modern social and economic
life begin to take their present forms.
3100 Teaching History in The Secondary
School (1-1-0)
Designed to acquaint the student with textbooks,
materials, methods, and lesson planning
for the teaching of history in the secondary
schools.
Prerequisite: HIST 1301, 1302, 2301, and
2302.
3301 Survey of the History of Texas (3-3-0)
A history of Texas from its discovery and exploration
to the present with due emphasis on
social and political subjects. Colonization and
the Texas Revolution are accentuated and the
, last quarter century receives special attention.
Students write at least one paper, selecting
their own subjects with the approval of the
teacher.
Prerequisite: HIST 1301, 1302, 2301, 2302.
3302 The Trans-Mississippi West (3-3-0)
A survey of the American experience west of
the Mississippi River from Spanish exploration
' and colonization in the southwest to the close of
the frontier in 1890. National expansion will be
the general theme, while specific developments
such as the Mormon movement, the west
in the Civil War, the concentration and pacification
of the Indians, and the fur trading, mining,
cattle, and agricultural frontier will be
explored.
Prerequisite: HIST 1301, 1302, 2301, 2302.
3304 Colonial America to 1783 (3-3-0)
An intensive analysis of the European colinization
of Eastern North America, the motives for
settlement, the growth of social, economic and
political institutions, the development of imperial-colonial
relations, the rise of slavery, the
role of religion and ideas in colonial life, and the
transitional process of Americanization from
1607 to 1783.
Prerequisite: HIST 1301, 1302, 2301, 2302.
3311 American Foreign Relations (3-3-0)

A study of the development of U.S. Foreign Policy
from the early days of isolationism to today's
total involvement in world affairs.
Prerequisite: HIST 1301, 1302, 2301, 2302.
3321 History of Latin America (3-3-0)
A survey of the development of Latin America
, from the Conquistadores to the present with
emphasis on conquest, colonial institutions,independence, and post-independence
developments.
Prerequisite: HIST 1301, 1302, 2301, 2302.
3352 Ancient Greece and Rome to 476 A.D.
(3-3-0)
A study of the rise and fall of Ancient Greece
and Rome. Emphasis will be placed upon their
contributions in the areas of government, scientific
development, philosophy, religious
thought, and general knowledge.

3355 Europe During the Age of Absolutism
and the Revolutionary Era, 1650-1815
(3-3-0)
A comprehensive survey of European society
from 1650 to 1815. The major emphases of the
course will be on the subjugation of the European
churches by secular authorities and the
subsequent decline in the spirituality among
the masses; the resulting spiritual and political
revolution that completely altered European
society, and the Napoleonic Era.
Prerequisite: HIST 1301, 1302, 2301, 2302.
3361 Modern Britain (3-3-0)
A survey of the history of England, the empire,
and commonwealth since 1688, with emphasis
on twentieth century England.
Prerequisite: HIST 1301, 1302, 2301, 2302.
3363 History of Modern Germany, 1650 to
Present (3-3-0)
A survey of German history from Frederick the
Great through the formation of East and West
Germany and up to the present. The major foci
of the course will be on the emergence of Prussia
as a European power and its ultimate domination
of the German Empire, Germany's role in
the origins of WWI, the failure of democracy in
Germany, the rise of Adolf Hitler, and the origins,
structure, practice, and effects of
Nazism.
Prerequisite: HIST 1301, 1302, 2301, 2302.
3399 Special Topics (3-3-0)
Topics offered as demand reflects an interest in
areas of history not covered by existing catalog
courses. Course may be repeated when the
topic of study changes.
Prerequisite: HIST 1301, 1302, 2301, 2302.
4301 The New Nation, 1783-1828 (3-3-0)
Surveys the period of Confederation, the Constitution,
the organization of the federal government,
the emergence and battles of the first
party system, Jeffersonian politics, the War of
1812, and the growth of American
nationalism.
