Notes

Reverend Samuel Fisher Tenney was born in Athens, Georgia, on March 26, 1840. He graduated from the University of Georgia in 1861 and immediately enlisted in the Confederate Army. He was ordained as a minister by the East Texas Presbytery in 1869 and began work at First Presbyterian Church of Crockett, Texas, in December 1870, where he remained until April 1925. During his time in Crockett, Tenney's missionary efforts helped establish over half a dozen African American schools and churches in eastern Texas. He also led mission work with the Alabama-Coushatta Indians which led to the creation of an Indian Presbyterian Church in 1884. He also led the way for women to become more involved in the Presbyterian Church.
