FAMILY FARMER has become
THE
come the unwanted and despised
stepchild In the American
economic family Believing him to
be an outmoded creature something
like the maker of horseshoes
of another generation his big brothers
think of him as an economic
parasite whom they are subsidizing
Those most outspoken frankly demand
that he be liquidated Others
not so frank suggest that he be
allowed to die a natural death
town topics
FACE the facts The farmer
LETS
er has been pictured to the
nation as the one responsible for
the high cost of living the one who
is living off the charity of the rest
of the economy the one who drives
several Cadillacs and lives in luxury
yet whines when his subsidies
arc cut off
Big business and Secretary Benson
have taken the lead in making
SilSKk him the most unpopular person In
the nation today

press and from speakers
sponsored by big business we hear
the brazen charge that the farm
program Is not unlike subsidizing
the buggy and horse whip manufac
turer who no longer has a natural
market for his products
We deny that the two situations
are comparable
Despite the inroads made by the
synthetics we deny that the products
of agriculture are on their
way out With three fifths of the
worlds population going to bed
j hungry every night with a higher
percentage improperly clothed and
with the population growing by
leaps and bounds a net increase
of 50000 persons each day it is
ridiculous to suppose that the world
demand for food and fiber is des
creasing necessitating the moving
3 of millions of persons off the farms
To do so would be nothing less
than setting the stage for world famine
in case of world war or some
other tragedy curtailing production
of food and fiber
jk
t The Bible speaks of a time of
famine when a quart of wheat will
sell for approximately a days
wages
t Perhaps this will bo a result of
such a program to diminish our pro
5 ductive capacity

T QUT SINCE there are efficiency

which could
J staying a crop
be a Godsend in case of war or
famine lets apply their rule of efficiency
to some other phases of
y our economy
Two years ago while a tourist in
Karachi Pakistan we purchased a
Britishmade tooth brush The price
was in line with that charged for a
similar brush to be had at any
American drug store We have used
that same brush twice a day for
more than two years and it is as
good as the day it was purchased
Its a wellknown fact that British
made automobiles are built to last
many years some for lifetime Not
only are they made to wear but
> since the styles do not change often
ones car does not seem outofdate
even though it may be driven for
25 or 30 years
TOWN topics
m jr HATS THE point some
ff one asks Its this American
manufacturers do not make
products as good as they are capable
of doing To do so would depress
future markets
We cannot vouch for the correctness
of this statement but we are
told by reliable authority that automobile
engines can be built which
will consume a different fuel much
more inexpensive than gasoline But
to do so would curb the demand
for gasoline and the oil industry
wouldnt approve of that
town topics
BUSINESS is quick to defend
BIG
its position by pointing to
the unemployment that would result
if any plan was instituted which
would lessen the demand for toothbrushes
or automobiles
But it demands for the farmer
what it is unwilling to accept for itself
And in our opinion the farmers
position ismuch more justifiable
than that of business Perhaps
the day will come when some needed
transitions can be effected without
throwing our economy off balancetown topics
THE fact that a large

majority of Swisher fanners
have the intelligence to recognize
the seriousness of the present plight
of the farmer there are a few who
say I am getting along all right
Such an attitude is disturbing indeed
Of course it always happens
that there are isolated instances that
dont follow the general pattern
There were a few isolated cases
Where farmers actually enjoyed
prosperity during the Great Depression
of the early 30s There were a
few failures during the lush years
which followed World War II
We rejoice with those farmers
who are getting along well today
But the disturbing element Is their
lack of vision and foresljjht

Bankers Told Ike Will Tighten Farm Squeeze Next Year
A firm of banking counselors has
advised its clients that the Administrations
preelection honeymoon
with farmers and small
businesswill be tapered off as soon
as the election is over
This information Is from the Aug
18 issue of Pratts Letter which
Is published by A S Pratt Sons
Inc banking counselors The letter
is circulated by subscription only
and Is restricted to banking firms
Because of the vital importance of
the subject to the farmers this Issue
of Pratts Letter is quoted
Farmers are In for a surprise too
once the elections are over
Today the farmer can finance
any and all needs thru the Farmers
Home Administration with the exception
of the family car FHA has
so many emergency credit programs
going now theres even some
doubt about that exceptionl
This bountiful help to farmers
will begin to taper off next year
There wont be a lot of pubicity connected
with it or repeal of legislation
It will be done quietly
thru administrative inaction Suddenly
the farmer will discover
its just a little harder to get a gov
ernment loan for farm improvements
to refinance existing indebtedness
etc
The same holds tme for the soil
bank This years emergency subsidy
plan will give way to a flat program
for reducing farm production
The Administration has NO Intention
